Here is what I want to do: I have a MKV file and I want to edit it. Because there is not such a good tool like VDM editing avi, so I decide to convert MKV to avi and then do the edit.

Source: MKV file, H264 + AC3

Steps I have tried:
1. First, I extract MKV to raw H264 + AC3. I use MKVextractGUI to split it to a.h264 and AC3.
2. AVC2AVI seems the only tool I can use to convert a raw H264 file to avi, so I tried MeGUI, tools -> Muxer ->AVC2AVI and I got an avi file.
3. I played this avi file and it looks fine. (I did not add the audio just because it does not matter to the result)
4. Load this avi file to VDM and set a start and end point, choose “Direct Stream Copy” and then save to file b.avi.
5. Play b.avi, and it is NOT playable!

I have tried to use VDM to edit an avi file which is not converted from mkv but also in H264 + AC3, and it does work. So the problems seem in step 2: the avi made from AVC2AVI is not editable for VDM.

Is anyone here can give me a hand?

Try using AvimuxGUI. It can take MKV input directly, and then save the file by setting AVI in the output settings and saving the file

You should be able to edit the AVI in VirtualDub no problem. As long as it is playable before you feed it to VD you should be fine.

Edit: Wait, how did you get this MKV?

Try using AvimuxGUI. I am pretty sure it can take MKV input directly, so no need to demux before hand.

I tried it.
I only select one mkv file and then "generate datasource files", then hit Start. but I can not save it as an AVI file.
The only option in the SaveAs box is mkv format.

@shawn888

Might it be easier to edit the original source material from which you created the .MKV file?

The MKV file is the only original file I got.

The MKV file is the only original file I got.I'm afraid I don't understand.

How did you create or otherwise obtain the .MKV file?

Yes.
Are these related the question I am asking?

That's a rule 6 violation. Don't do it again.
