Trouble playing x264 file

I searched for a thread but I couldn't find the same problem.

I just downloaded a 720p x264 file off the net but i'm having trouble running it. I've tried VLC player but the sound is completely out of sync (by about 20 seconds or something crazy). So i tried Windows media player but it didnt open so I then tried Windows media classic and no luck there.

Just tried to make sure i had the latest x264 codec but a msdos menu opens up then closes instantly. Weird

Ideally i'd love to get this .mkv file working on windows media player 11 cause I like the colour defaults on that more so than on VLC

What do you find weird, the fact that "a msdos menu closes instantly" or the fact that you doubleclick on a command-line executable from a GUI ?

either way, you downloaded the wrong piece of software.
