Hi, I am currently in the process of converting a vhs video of mine into a dvd. So far I have captured it successfully and am in the process of editing it in virtual dub. The file is about 30GB in size and I want to cut out commercials and remove the noise lines around the bottom and sides of the image. Is it acceptable to just cut away the areas affected by noise lines (thus making the resolution smaller) or should I add black pixels afterwards so that the resolution remains the same as it originally did? I also want to split the file into two clips, can this all be done in one process or will i have to first edit the video, re-encode, and then split?

I tried doing the editing part a few minutes ago and I ended up having a file 50Gb in size, nearly twice the size as the original, and there was a diagonal line through the video in which it appeared that the video had pushed to one side. After spending an hour encoding I was a bit frustrated with the result and came here for answers on how I should do it properly. I used the huffyuv codec to capture and want to use the same codec to edit, resolution is 720x576 (PAL) and there was no audio compression, surely if these settings remain the same throughout editing the output file size should be the same as the original???

Thanks in advance.

Hi!

I'm fairly certain that at least some of your problems will disappear if you change the resolution to 720x576...

Sorry that was a typo, I meant 720x576, 720x565 was the resolution after I cut away the garbage at the bottom of the recording before I replaced it with black pixels.
