Transitions between images using command line tools

Hi,

I'm making animated maps based on static PNGs, using mencoder on Linux. My current result looks like this. (http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/mant/north.avi)

I'd like to make pretty transitions between each frame. Does anyone know of a linux/unix command line tool that will do this?

(this seemed like the best section to put this, apologies if it isn't)

Thanks.Hi :p. Welcome from EVE-O, though I personally don't know any easy way to do it in Linux--Windows is easy with Avisynth but Avisynth 3 for Linux isn't released yet.
