There are programs just for that, but I can't think of them right now. You could just make a spreadsheet with name, location, and anything else you would want to sort by.

If you burn them off it is a good idea to put them in the same order you have the original disks in. Alphabetically is always good.

Last place I saw any was on Digital-digest years ago. Don't know anything about them or that site now, but here you go.

@chevyvanman

Hi!

For a simple two column listing of "Name" and "Date Acquired", use Microsoft Excel. Set the name column to text format and the date column to date format (doh ;>}). Simply add each new acquisition to the next row down, entering the name in Column A and the acquisition date in Column B.

Should you wish to temporarily alphabetize the list, simply highlight BOTH columns (to maintain the name/date relationship) and sort by "NAME". Then print your list and afterwards, select "undo sort" to get them back in "Date Acquired" order.

This will also allow you to store your DVDs in order of "Date Acquired", without having to physically alphabetize them ;>}

[spam removed] program supports import movie details from the dozen online sources, including IMDb. It is able to download cover images for HD DVDs and Bluray discs as well.
Quite a nice movie organizer solution.

Your first post and it's for something that's not free (as noted in a previous message chevyvanman was looking for freeware).

Another vote for Ant. I like the way you can enter a title and have all the details filled in from IMDB or other sources. You can also script it to play the movies from your HD if you want.

I also used Ant Movie Catalog, but unfortunately its development was dropped and some useful features were still missing. That's why I chose Movienizer (http://movienizer.com). It's a freeware and, besides, I was glad to find out that I could import my Ant Movie Catalog database into it. I didn't lose any data and did't have to create my collection all over again. Besides I find Movienizer more easy to use and navigate.

Ok , I have over 200 DVDs ( commercial - regen 2 - UK ) , which I would like to catalog, and around 120 CDs
and I have a Bar Code scanner ( picked it up as junk but it works fine, just press the button )

Any ideas.

Ps - the barcode scanner is connected in-line with the keyboard - it scans the barcode - outputs the number and sends a [return] key code.

Over at XBMC, some dev's are working on a universal media manager.

Basically you have 2 or 3 choices of folder structure and the media manager makes sure all the extra info gets added.

I use the following structure:

D:/Movies/The Matrix (1999)/The Matrix (1999).mkv

(i have remuxed all my DVD's to save space and avoid all the dvd navigator bugs)

i then run MIP (http://mediainfoplus.com/) and that will download all the information, cover art and screenshots for me.

I have have several choices(because the file naming and layout is almost universal:
I personally use XBMC in windowed mode with AEON skin and a mod.

It looks like this:

Boy, seems like everyone who is a little into this subject stumbles upon this one day...
My opinion is that storing the movies on a seperate HDD is the best solution. What I´ve been looking for lately is a good-looking graphical solution to organize on which HDD those are stored. Are you able to recommend one that is even able to download corresponding movie information? I´m especially paying attencion to the features of the program as well as its looks here. Please don´t be platform specific. ;)

MIP is windows specific, but its followup UMM is platform independent (so is xbmc)

Thanks. Two questions before I test your recommended software:

1. What do you mean by follow-up of MIC? Is UMM ahaed in it´s development?
2. Is a manual entry in XBMC possible (movies are stored on several HDDs)?

So some time has passed and I'm wondering what people are recommending these days. I recently made the move from backing up to DVD's to having a file server. Before I kept a detailed spread sheet which listed things like resolution, genre, IMDB # and so on. This will no longer work as the sheet was designed around disk numbers.
