View Full Version : Problems finalizing double layer DVDs

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a solution to a problem that drives me crazy, I've looked a lot and read all I could find, but still haven't managed to solve it. I'd appreciate it a lot if someone has any ideas.
The problem is as follows:
I have a DVD standalone burner, and I use it to burn our home movies from the video camera, and an occasional program on TV. It works well with regular DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs, but when I try using double layer DVDs I can't finalize them. If I try to finalize, the disk is ruined, and I can't see it even in the standalone itself.
I'm using Verbatim DVD+R double layer media.
When I tried using software I downloaded to finalize those DVDs I couldn't - both DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn can't do the "close disk" or "close session".

I copied what some of those programs I tried "said" about one such DVD:

ImgBurn:

HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H44N RB00 (ATA)
Current Profile: DVD+R DL

Disc Information:
Status: Incomplete
Erasable: No
Free Sectors: 15,872
Free Space: 32,505,856 bytes
Free Time: 03:33:47 (MM:SS:FF)

Physical Format Information (Last Recorded):
Disc ID: MKM-001-00
Book Type: DVD+R DL
Part Version: 1
Disc Size: 120mm
Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified
Number of Layers: 2
Track Path: Opposite Track Path (OTP)
Linear Density: 0.293 um/bit
Track Density: 0.74 um/track
First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196,608
Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 16,580,607
Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 2,283,519

When I try the "close" option the error message is:

"Session Fixation Error - Incomplete Track in Session"

DVD Decrypter writes the same things.

DVD Shrink won't read the DVD, says "no disk" in the drive.

IsoBuster can read it, calls it "open session", and shows
ISO, UDF and IFO icons. When I try extracting the ISO volume the program starts working, but then I get error messages almost immediately, about sectors that can't be read.

Does anybody have any advice for me?
I am sorry for the lengthy post, but I thought I'd write all the information I have to avoid misunderstaigs.

Thank you very much for your help!

Welcome to the forums Lacerta, verify which recordable modes your Standalone supports and DL compatibility. Check if the disc plays fine on the PC, since AFAIK open sessions are playable on the PC and ImgBurn doesn’t support multi-session. If it fails playing on the LG-Drive, try in another computer/drive.

Try the following for your PC drive & ImgBurn (if the above doesn’t apply):

- latest firmware ( http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWARE/LG/LG-GSA-H44N-Firmware-RB01.shtml)
- cleaning the drive
- lowering the speed (e.g. 2X)
- verifying the Auto Change Book Type option, DVD+R DL Media is supposed to be selected, and in “Advance” HL-DT-ST (ImgBurn)
- closing the session in another drive using ImgBurn (since DVD Decrypter is older), give it a go!
- post at the ImgBurn Forums (http://forum.imgburn.com) since it could be either bad: media or drive DL support

Hope it helps!

@Lacerta

Hi!I have a DVD standalone burnerWhat is the brand and model number?

(I'm guessing that it doesn't properly support burning of D/L media - including the all important setting of the "layer break")

Thank you for your answers!

Setarip_old, The standalone is an LG, model no. DR7622W.
The manual states clearly DVD+R DL discs are in the list of "recordable and playable" disks, though Verbatim is listed as "recommendable" only for DVD-R's, and not for the DL's, but how fussy can a machine be...?

Kikatu,
I did try cleaning the drive, and closing the session in my computer's drive using ImgBurn, it doesn't work..:(
The standalone doesn't have burning options, I can't change the speed, or check a media type etc., I just choose the "quality" and press "record". As for updating the drivers, how do I do that for a standalone? I never knew this was possible.
As I wrote earlier, I have tried several disks, with the same results, and can't play them on anything at all after trying the finalization. Before finalization they play wonderfully on the standalone itself, but not, of course, on any other drive.

Thanks yet again.

The manual states clearly DVD+R DL discs are in the list of "recordable and playable" disks1) Forgive me for asking an obvious question - Does the manual contain any specific information regarding finalizing D/L media?

2) Did you purchase the unit NEW, or was it a REFURBISHED unit? I ask this because I've had problems with refurbished hardware purchased from ComputerGeeks. com

Unfortunately, nothing in the manual regarding finalization in DL's. (Nothing like "oops, we forgot to tell you that...").
And I did buy it new. Hence my irritation. The tech service had no idea what I was talking about. They said my media must be faulty.

And thanks again.

Hi Lacerta, sorry for not specifying, those suggestions were for ImgBurn and the LG drive in the computer, exept for "verify which recordable modes your Standalone supports and DL compatibility" (will edit). You can also find out if it’s the media by simply ripping a commercial DL movie, and burn a test at 2.4X. If it’s bad media, hope is refundable.

Best

@gktHow Do I Get In Touch With Setarip_old?You can't directly.

You can, of course, create a new thread to post a question...
