I'm trying to convert some low quality asf/wmv files to avi in vdub-mpeg2 and it is giving me an error:
"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'WMV1' (unknown). Virtualdub requires a Video For Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable".
I downloaded Windows Media Player 9 & 8 codecs but not sure if they are right or want to install them.
Basically, where should I download this VFW codec for wmv1?
:thanks:

VfW codec for WMV1/7 not exist (Microsoft release only for WMV3/9).
Try ffdshow VfW.
ffdshow video encoder configuration > Decoder > Codecs > WMV1/7
Or Avisynth script (DirectShowSource).

Try Avidemux or MediaCoder.

You should use latest official VirtualDub v1.7.6 (http://www.virtualdub.org/beta/VirtualDub-1.7.6-test9.zip) plus fccHandler's MPEG-2 (http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/Plugins/MPEG2/)/WMV (http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/Plugins/WMV/index.html) plugins now.
The VirtualDub-MPEG2 mod should be obsolete, thanks to the latest development...

Not so fast. Last time I looked, VirtualDub v1.7.6 with the plugin took seven times as long as the VirtualDub-MPEG2 mod to load an input video. A 50 minute MPEG2 video took about 6 minutes to load in the official version with the plugin, but only 50 seconds in the MPEG2 mod.

And the last time you looked would be...? They (fccHandler/Phaeron) have been working on this stuff for the past two weeks with almost daily updates. Version 1.9 of the mpeg2 plugin creates an index file so it's much faster to re-open files than vdub-mpeg2.

The last time I looked was indeed version 1.9, which I downloaded on October 19, its release date. I couldn't post immediately because there's a five-day waiting period for new registrants.
I don't quite understand the reference to "re-opening." I timed initial opening of the input file at 50 seconds for vdub-MPEG2 vs. 6 minutes for the new vdub with the plugin. I'd be interested in hearing about other people's measurements.
And even if a faster plugin comes out tomorrow, don't forget that I was replying to an October 10 post, before "the past two weeks" of "working on this stuff." Any claim at that time that vdub-MPEG2 was obsolete would have been premature.

You should post about your findings at the VirtualDub forum and ask fccHandler about it.

Not my job. If the developers are staying aware of competing approaches to the tasks they want to accomplish, they don't need my help. If they're not, they don't deserve it.
VirtualDub, as it turns out, is not the best approach to what I wanted to accomplish. My post here was just a comment on a comment, not a request for help.
My best wishes go to those who seek a better VirtualDub, among all those who seek to better mankind in any way. Farewell, pax vobiscum, salaam aleikem, etc., etc.

Egads! Why on earth would someone use windows movie maker to do that, and using VirtualDub is perfectly legal.
