New (small) feature request: option to skip PCB block
M1ckey M0use

DVD2SVCD,
Can you make an option in the program for skipping creation of the PCB block in XML?
My Philips standalone DVD player doesn't like the PCB block and it won't show the menu or playing time. So now i have to mannually remove the PCB block from XML and rerun the CD creation.
If i do that, i'm still able to use chapters so thats ok.
So basicly, the only thing to create is a checkbox, and just before the PCB block creation, a check if the checkbox is checked.
I hope ya have time to sneak this req in. It would save me (and others with this problem) some time.

you can't just press '1' instead of 'PLAY' on your remote control to skip PBC?

My DVD player is confused when the PCB block is added.
I can't select the onscreen menu anymore so
- i can't select the now working subtitles
- i can't see the playing time on my display
- I can't select audio track
- and i can't set the starttime from where i want to start the movie.
If i remove the PCB block from the XML and rebuild the CD with the same command line DVD2SVCD uses, i can select the onscreen menu and can do all things above.

He just removes the PBC tags at the beginning and end of the .xml and I assume uses crash recovery to resume from the cd image creation point.

I have the same problem, as I have mentioned in another thread (the one on player compatibility). In my case it is a venerable Apex AD-600A (A8 firmware).
I use a finalize script to do this. I like things to be automated. The script edits the .xml file to delete the PBC tag. It then reruns the vcdxbuild tool to regenerate the images.
A checkbox would be nice (or setting chapters to every 0 minutes turns them off -- something like that) but I don't mind running vcdxbuild twice in my case, since the vcdxbuild step is only something like 1% of the entire process.

Daxab, would you mind sharing the script with us for the time being?

Here's the script. A few notes:
1. It needs perl to run. Just go to this URL to get it (free):
http://www.activestate.com/Products/Download/Get.plex?id=ActivePerl
Default install without examples, web server support etc., will work fine. Make sure the perl directory is in your PATH.
2. It needs to know where the vcdimager directory is. If you look in the .bat file near the top there is a line for this. It currently points to the default C: drive location that DVD2SVCD goes to. This will work for most folks but if you installed elsewhere you need to change this.
3. It needs to be set to "close on exit." The .pif file included in the .zip should do this trick for Win98SE users, but I have no clue as to whether it will work on XP/2K or not -- maybe not. A bit of a mystery to me, these .pif files.
Pls let me know if there are any probs.

I couldn't figure out how to attach to the message (it says it is, but I don't see it), so go here for the script:

The problem I have on my Apex AD-600A is that it plain won't recognize an SVCD with chapters, at all. If I delete the PBC tag and rebuild the image, the disk works fine.

You wrote:

How do you do this, every time i've changed the xml files i return to crash recovery and choose svcd authoring phase but when i continue the process runs fast and says svcd finished, what do i have to do to begin since svcd authorng without problems?

wait for 1.0.6 release. It has [X]Use Selections which is the default and which is currently used. If you uncheck that it'll use 'playlists' which might enable your apex to utilize chapters.

Ok i star again from svcd authoring but it makes the xml again and erase my changed files so this method "He just removes the PBC tags at the beginning and end of the .xml and I assume uses crash recovery to resume from the cd image creation point." doesn't work, any sugestion...

Hia daxab,
Encouraged by your script, i made something that doesn't need the perl environment.
It uses the dvd2svcd.ini file to get all the needed paths so i guess it's user friendly. Just place it in the dvd2svcd dir and add this exe to be run after cd image creation.
I wrote a little app in delphi. I'm making it availible with source.
I didn't test it yet as part of with the dvd ripping process because i'm @ work now.

OK, it wasn't very bugfree but i was at work so i couldn't test it..
Here's a new one. Again with source.
Just put it in the dvd2svcd directory (or else it can't find dvd2svcd.ini file) and modify the finalyse page.
Put removepbc.exe in the "run this per dvd" editbox and put %CD# in the parameters editbox.

Oh dvd2svcd the wish still stands :) This is only a workaround..

Try unchecking the "Use Selections" in the CD Image tab.
M1ckey M0use

And that removes the pbc block from xml? Great! will test that with the next DVD i'm gonna backup..
Thanks.

No, it will not remove the PCB. But I hope it will make your Philips behave. If it doesn't let me know.

OK
M1ckey M0use
16th January 2002, 16:06
Yep, that fixed it..
I ripped a small chapter to see if it's working now and it seems that it does the job. Now lets do some testing with subtitles and so..
Thanks!

Hmm. maybe i cheered to fast..
The first rip didn't have subtitles in it (i took the shortest chapter i could find on the DVD).
The second chapter i tested, has subtitles but i can't select them because the menu is "blocked" again.. :(
Gonna test some more..

And the menu is back after removing the pbc block..

I tried unchecking "Use selections" and it didn't help for my craggly old player (Apex AD-600A). It still refuses to accept the disk unless I delete the whole PBC tag and rebuild.

mickey mouse in your philips player the SVCD subs play well with PBC???? and without PBC ???????
M1ckey M0use
17th January 2002, 11:12
The selectable SVCD subs play fine when i remove the PBC block from XML and create new images. If i leave the PBC block in XML, i can't select the menu and thus can't select the subtitles...

So just to be sure. You delete everything between (and including) <pbc> and </pbc> ?

My Philips 612 is acting in the same way like M1ckey M0use's.I usually create the SVCDs with PBC. But during playback of these SVCDs I deactivate PBC in the system menu (just before starting playback). So I can use the chapters and subs but time and the player functions are available. The disadvantage is that the title and change-cd picture isn't shown...but this doesn't matter, I think.

mickey mouse whats your model ???? 951 ? 955?
because in my 951 the svcd subs works fine, but sometimes the actor stop talking and the subs stay, only go when anyone said something
you understand ???? sorry my poor english
if i quit pbc in the xml this problem will be ok ???
thanks

DVD2SVCD, yes, i delete the whole block including <pbc> </pbc> tags.
mOE, I didn't see that there was such an option in the menu. When i insert the disc, it starts playing immediatly and then i can't select the menu anymore. I'll check it when i'm home.
But DVD2SVCD, even if this works for me, i think daxab will like such an option and maybe other too with incompatible players.
cHAs_ChaS i have an Philips 751. I don't think that removing the pbc tag, will solve your problem.

@M1ckey M0use
You can reach the main menu when no cd is inserted or a dvd is in, or not?
Somewhere there is the option PBC, by default on...
The 612er firmware is nearly equal to the ones in the 700 series.
@cHAs_ChaS
I have the same problems with SVCD subs on my Philips 612. An the player freezes after some time with subs in the stream.Especially when I switch multiple times between subs and no subs...!!!??!?!
I don't know if its always so because I made only one SVCD with subs.
M1ckey M0use
17th January 2002, 16:36
Yeah, thanks, i found it. And it works for me.
Any idea why there is a PBC menu option? And why it's default set to on?
And about the freezes of svcd's with subtitles, I had that too once. I think it has something to do with the minimum / maximum bitrate you have set for cce. Lower the maximum bitrate and try again..

Every Standalone player I know has such an option. Many have an extra button on remote commander for on/off switching...
But I don't understand why the philips deactivates nearly all buttons or functions of the player.
The time prob is not a philips specific thing. Also on other players it does't work.
About the freeze problem: it's possible that the bit rate was too high. It was the movie with the highest bitrate I ever used. But I used the default settings of DVD2SVCD. It adjusted the bitrate itself.
Is it possible that the bitrate gets so much bigger because of the subs???? (so that it is more than 2500 kbit/s). I dont know.

mOE this problems with subs is very strange.
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14106
there you can see another person with the same problem, and his theory.
I upgrade the firmware and the subs in my 951 goes ok, but 5 minutes later the subs disapear and come back 20 or 30 seconds before, but out of sync. so i don't know what happppen with philips players and SVCD subs.
sorry my poor english
