Hi,
I've been using DVD Decrypter and Auto Gordian Knot for my DVD ripping. Is it possible to encode subtitles into my ripped files? I don't need to be able to switch them on and off, I'd just like to be able to have avi files with subtitles (for foreign films and such). AutoGK has a box for subtitles, but nothing has ever shown up in it for me. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks.

Hello, and welcome to the forums,
You didn't tell us the source of the video, or the kind, if it's from a DVD or the source is already in AVI format. Nor did you tell us if the subs are directly from the DVD or if they are external - perhaps downloaded from somewhere.
Anyway, if the source is a DVD and you just want to burn ordinary subs from the DVD into the video - they're not Forced Subs or anything peculiar - then the directions from the included tutorial should do:
If you want burnt in subtitles, then choose your subtitle track. The default setting is for burned in or subtitles embedded into the video.
.
Another Subtitle Option in the Advanced Settings is Forced Subs. Ticking that box does NOT force AutoGK to put the subs into the movie. It's for a special class of subtitles that you'll want, even if you don't want the regular subtitles in your language. Examples of Forced Subs may include the Elvish spoken in the LOTR movies, the Alien languages of the Star Wars movies, the Spanish spoken in Traffic, or sometimes signs in a different language.
If you want regular subs, choose them in the main screen, and don't do anything in the Advanced settings screen. Troubles sometimes come from anime episodes all in the same VTS, where you might get subs in the first episode, but not the others. Make sure and run the Preview after setting up the encode, to see if the subs show up, so you don't waste time with the encoding only to find out after several hours that you don't have any subs.
If you already have subs from an external source and want to stick them into the video, then after loading the video, hit CTRL-F8 and add in the subs:

Thanks for your reply, and sorry about the missing info.
I'm ripping from DVD's, and I want the regular subtitles, like what would show up when I put the DVD into a regular DVD player and turn subtitles on.
I'm not seeing anything under subtitles when I load the VTS in AutoGK, for some reason. Here's a screen shot (http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u47/butterfry/screen1.jpg), if it helps.
I'm convinced that the subtitles are in somewhere, because I played around with SubRip and it found subtitles in the .vob files.
Oddly enough, when I load a file with the extension .ifo, it gives me check boxes for subtitles, but I can't seem to Preview, Add Job, or Start. Here's (http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u47/butterfry/screen2.jpg) what it looks like.
I can't figure out what's going on.
But any help is greatly appreciated.

The reason you only see subtitle when you load the ifo is because they are only referenced in the ifo, not the vob file.
I think your only problem is that you need to specify your output path. Then you should be able to "Add Job". I don't really know, 'cause I don't use Autogk. However, I do know that it is capable of doing what you want.
FYI, subs that are always on are called "hard subs" or "burnt subs" because you can't remove them again (at least, not easily) once the file has been encoded.
"Soft subs" are subs that you can choose to be on or off, with just the click of a mouse. I am not sure if the avi container supports soft subs, it might. The best containers for such a thing are mp4 or mkv.

Thanks for the help, especially the terminology clarification.
Using the IFO and specifying an output path lets me Add Job and Start. I'll let you all know if I need any more help.
:thanks:

Thanks butterfry for providing that first pic. Yes, it made all the difference and I neglected to mention that you don't get subs unless you load the IFO. And thanks Merlin7777 for making it clear. Your advice was 100% correct; not bad for someone that doesn't even use AutoGK.

Hi!The reason you only see subtitle when you load the ifo is because they are only referenced in the ifo, not the vob file. Please enlighten me as to how that can be the case if, when I load just one ripped .VOB (of a full DVD "package" of .VOBs, .IFOs, and .BUPs) into VLC, I'm able to properly display any and all of the applicable subs?

They are contained within the .VOB - they are referenced in the .IFO file.
