i've some mpeg-4 asp rips [of varying codec] all within 703 - 705 mb caused by incorrect encoding settings. the sources are no longer avaliable.

is't possible to reencode just the credits to a lower bitrate? i'd rather not tamper with the audio quality, and cutting parts of the capture is out of the question

there's one done in xvid, one with divx 5 and two with divx 3 [remnants from earlier experiments]

You definitely can. As long as it's a compatible codec (divx is compatible with xvid as long as you don't use xvid's GMC, but not old divx3), you can cut off the credits, re-encode, and append again with virtualdub or avidemux. You might need to save and remux the audio, not sure if it'll survive a split in sync.

i've now reencoded the credits to give two files which add perfectly to 700. but virtualdub [1.7.5] throws a fit when i try to append them.. taking the sound out of the files makes no difference yet

"The video streams have incompatible data formats. (Mismatch detected in opaque codec data at byte 21 of the format data)."

the first part i left alone is DX50, same frame rate and res as the second part, also DX50, reencoded through virtualdub in divx 6.7.

any suggestions?

curiously enough avidemux joins the segments just fine, despite emitting several confusing warnings and suggesting that i unpack all VOPs... anyways, the resulting file is 700mb, has fine sound, but there's an audible blip when the files 'switch', no ideas how that got there?

maybe just trimming the credits would be the easiest way after all, Mtz :(
