View Full Version : Knocked Up stuck in black screen loop

I've tried ripping the HD-DVD release of "Knocked Up" using DumpHD, AnyDVD HD, and DVDFabDecryptor HD with the same results. When I try playing the ripped files in PowerDVD Ultra 7.3 I get nothing but a black screen which indicates Title 1 and Chapter 1. The black screen plays for about 15 seconds or so and then cycles back to the beginning and just keeps repeating. I try to access other Chapters but the only thing showing up in the Go To list is Chapter 1. The skip function doesn't work either.

I believe it's a Sony release. I figure it's some new trick they're using to thwart us once again.

First, there are no HD-DVDs from Sony. Second, have you tried to play the disc in Disc Mode or have you played back individual EVO files? Does none of the EVOs work? For DumpHD, is the key correct? Does DumpHD show any errors or warnings in its log?

Doh! I thought I saw the Sony logo on the case but now that you mention it I had to be wrong (must have been having another senior moment). I got a Blu-Ray disc and an HD-DVD that I was ripping simultaneously on two different PCs and probably just got the two mixed up. I use an X-Box 360 HD-DVD drive with my HTPC and a Pioneer BD reader in my main PC. The HD-DVD (The Lives of Others) ripped fine with no playback problems.

I tried playing back the files in disc mode, which resulted in the endless black screen loop. When I tried playing back the FEATURE_1.EVO file I got video but the audio stuttered like crazy. I did try a few random EVOs and they seemed to play back OK but I plan on trying a few more. DumpHD didn't give me any errors, although initially it said it couldn't find the disc ID. I had to try it several times before it would rip the disc successfully.

AnyDVD HD and DVDFabDecryptor HD ripped the same disc with no error messages, but I got exactly the same results as with DumpHD. I'm using the latest version of DumpHD that uses aacskeys automatically to detect the Disc ID and Volume Unique keys. I've had no problems with any of the other Blu-Ray discs that I tried it with.

Looks like your rip is ok, seems like its PowerDVD again causing the problems. According to highdefdigest this is a quite new release which uses PiP and online content stuff. If you are already using the latest version of PowerDVD theres not really anything more you can do than waiting for an update.

I checked and discovered I didn't have the latest update so I downloaded and installed the 3104 patch for PowerDVD Ultra. Unfortunately, it didn't help a bit so I'm back at square one. Maybe I'll give Nero Showtime a shot with the HD plug-in and see how it goes.

Ajax - I just ordered the HD plug-in for Nero but so far all I got was an e-mail with a license key. I can't tell if I'm supposed to download the plug-in from somewhere or if they're going to mail it to me via e-mail or snail mail. The info regarding delivery was non-existent, unless I'm missing something. Any clue as to how it's delivered?

Open Nero StartSmart then click on product center and paste the key and it will activate it...

PS. You might want to DDl a up to date copy of your entire nero package...

there are two xml files in the directory, rename the second one with a .bak extension and your problem should be solved...

Thanks. I'll give that a shot later today. It would be nice if it's as simple as that. I've been trying to install the HD plug-in for Nero but my internet connection is giving me fits and now I can't reinstall Nero for some reason. My connection crapped out in the middle of the download and now the whole thing is hosed. I'm trying to download an app that will totally clean all traces of previous Nero installations with the hope that it will allow me to reinstall it from scratch.

Update: I ran home at lunch and renamed the 2nd .xpl file as suggested and it worked like a charm. The movie plays back fine in Power DVD.
