View Full Version : Ripping movies spilt over two DVD's

I have a number of movies split over two DVD's due to their length. I ripped Titanic by taking the VOBs from the 2nd DVD and renamed them so they went after the VOBs of the first DVD. Example:
The first DVD ended as VTS_04_6.vob. So I took the VOBs from the 2nd DVD and renamed the to continue as VTS_04_7.vob upto VTS_04_13_vob.
Then loaded the VOBs into DGIndex. That worked perfectly for Titanic. Now I am ripping Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition. Up until the switch to the 2nd set of VOBs, the sound is in sync but loses massive sync after the transition.
Is there a better way of doing this as I don't think my way is ideal. Cheers, Mitch.

Rip and encode them separately, then (if you're using the mp4 containter) use Yamb to join them together:
http://yamb.unite-video.com/
or if you're using the mkv container use mkv (matroska) container use mkvmerge (gui) available in the mkvtoolnix package:
http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/downloads.html
Just ensure you use the join command and not the mux command!

Plus your renaming is against the DVD spec (there can be 10 VOBs in a VTS from _0 to _9)
Moved to Decrypting.

Sorry about the wrong location. It did seem to work up into double digits but as you mentioned, it's against spec which I didnt realise.
I'll re-encode the DVDs and join them together with mkvmerge. Thanks for the incredibly prompt replies.

It's also probably against DVD spec, but it might be possible to use 2GB vobs instead of 1 GB vobs and bring the VTS indexes back below 9. Not sure whether this will affect playback at all.
I think Ifoedit permitted setting different default sizes for the vobs when authoring them, but not sure if any of the other tools allow similar.

Doesnt matter now as I've deleted the previous copy and am currently re-ripping them. I've found that if I set DVD decrypter not to separate the files upon ripping, VSRip won't extract the subtitlea from the vobs so I like to keep it at 1GB.
One thing I wonder is, What will joining 2 MKV files do about chapters. I hope it will append the chapters from the 2nd file to the first.
