View Full Version : Gordion Knot--can't config x264 1º&2º Pass

I'm having an annoying trouble;
* I'm starting the Gordioan Knot and clicking on the option tab.
* At the x264 default codec settings, it has two options
* First Pass & Second Pass
* When I'm clicking there, nothing really happens
It seems obvious, the codec is not installed, or set unproperly, but I made the default installation of the Gordion Knot: first the RipPack and Codeck Pack (nnf)
Appretiates any help

This is the exact same problem I'm having. It's obvous that the codec is not installed and not included in the GordianKnot codec pack, however, I cannot seem to find any real instructions on how to install it. I'm following the guide at:
www.doom9.org/gknot-main6.htm
The guide sends you to this thread for the codec:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89979
However, the only downloads on there are for a program called x264.exe and the source, however, this is a command line tool and there are absolutely no instructions on how to use this with GordianKnot.
A little and advice from someone more experienced would be greatly appreciated here! ;)

I don't use GordianKnot myself (I use a combo of DVDShrink, AviSynth, and either meGUI or VirtualDubMod), but I'd suggest copying x264.exe everywhere in its Program Files directory. It's teeny, so it shouldn't be a big deal.

dont use gk for encoding with x264.
however if still want to do it (and dont care about the problems you will have) then get the x264 VFW builds here: http://mirror05.x264.nl/Cef/
keep in mind VFW is NOT supported anymore by x264 devs and it has MAJOR compatibility problems with new generation codecs (including x264).

Meh, there are more and better options in the DeathTheSheep VfW, wherever that could be found...

ok
now i am really confused, because the Doom9 guides that I trust implicitly tell me to use it?

That guide is also, what, over 3 years old and nearly 2 years since last revisited? Doom9's guides have fallen into a bit of neglect, unfortunately; in fact Doom9 himself now recommends against that method. At the very least, you must use DeathTheSheep's x264 with it rather than the official.
In the meantime a number of utilities that ease GK's pain points, like MeGUI, have been developed. GK'ss whole workflow is pretty outdated, with many tools and workarounds having been combined into a few, as are its avisynth scripts. For a tutorial on MeGUI, see the MeWiki. There are a number of other GUIs available in the forum dedicated to them, as well.

Thanks for the heads up, Given the quality of the guides on this site, that just indicated to me that they are still current and as good as ever.

I dont suppose that could be made obvious somewhere :-)
I seems i am not the only one who cant figure out what the heck I am supposed to do with a x264.exe file

thanks for that, i might have a look but not sure if i want to try learning something new again. I am kinda comfortable with GK :-)

x264 is command line driven, there are no fancy interfaces built into it.
Give MeGUI a try, its learning curve is about half an hour.

I had the same problem months ago. How i fixed it? I just started using MeGUI. As much as i loved GKnot(and i still do because MeGUI doesn't give me the expected results with xvid) you cannot configure the x264 encoding options. If you want to encode video using the x264 codec use MeGUI, StaxRip, RipBot264, Auto MKV or any of the other programs which are pretty much build for one reason - x264 encoding. Peace
