Sound and Picture Problems

hey. i tried to rip sowrdfish using this prog. at first it kept giving me I/O ERROR 23 over and over. so then i extracted all the files from the cd using Sector Extractor. i then again ran dvd2svcd and selected the biggest IFO file from the folder. i used 4 pass VBR, 48 to 44.1 conversion on High, and 256 KBS. everything was goin fine. when the .bin files were done, i burned then. when i played them back on my standalone the damn thing had NO sound. moreover, the picture (which was supposed to be widescreen) was "squished" (i can't think of another way to describe it). it was clear but the black bars on the top and bottom were extremely thick and sometimes interferred with the movie. for e.g. a person's hair would be cut off when they are talking, etc. anyone know what the problem is? i used this same prog before and it worked fine. the only change i made was i increased bitrate from 224 to 256, increased image quality priority from 17 to 50 and this time i activated ripping the subtitles. any suggestions or help would be appreciated. i have included my log so u guys can see what i did:

First Swordfish is a really bad movie, but I think I can help.
Swordfish is known to have issues.

1st way and best way, but requires more disk space (double the VOB files).

1. Get SmartRipper from Doom9
2. Use it to rip the movie into a temp directory
3. You are now done with the DVD
4. Start DVD2SVCD, keep the ripping on and select the movie IFO file from the temp directory (not DVD) you will need to make sure that the output directory of DVD2SVCD is different from the temp directory that the movie was origianlly ripped to. This makes sure that the movie is compatable with the rest of DVD2SVCD.
5. After DVD2SVCD has completed ripping the files in the temp directory you can erase them.
6. Continue running DVD2SVCD until done

2nd way and not always as good, but does not neet as much space.

1. Get SmartRipper from Doom9
2. Use it to rip the movie to anywhere
3. Uncheck ripping in DVD2SVCD
4. Select the IFO file from the ripped movie on the hard drive.
5. Continue running DVD2SVCD until done

I have done it both ways without issues, but some people have reported out of sync issues with method 2.

i read one of your posts about you using different bit rates and KHZ. i have a pioneer dv 440 and i want to achieve the best picture and sound quality possible. i read that you use 2600 max, 1330 min and 2450 max avergae. is there a site or forum that tells the max bit capability of my player or do i have to just find out the hard way? and what do you personally recommend are the best bit rates (both audio/video) to achieve quality as well as the least amount of disks?

It is all really compromise. If you want the greatest video and audio quality you may run into using an extra disk.
I have learned that for 90% of encodes 192 is more then enough audio bitrate for me. That will let me fit a little extra video on a disk.

An example from me is I am encoding Pearl Harbor right now. If I use my standard settings I end up with a 5th disk of 400mb. Well I don't know about you, but I really want to try and make this fit on 4. First thing I did was to drop the audio to 192 (this will save about 20-50mb depending on video length), next I dropped the Max to 2500, the Avg to 2250 and the Min to 1000. I don't know if this is enough. It's all a little of a guessing game because I don't care about the credits and they are not on a seperate chapter. If it still gives me a 5th disk with more then just the credits I will need to re-encode with lower video bitrates.

It's usually easier then this, because Pearl Harbor is so long and on 2 DVD's it's harder. Most times I trust the built in bitrate calc to decide what I want to place in MAX and how many discs I am willing to live with. Most people place the number of discs over the quality of the video. I am more to the right of that. I place more imporatance on video quality, but not so much to make me put less then 300 or so megs on the last disc.

i c i c. so the point is follow th guide but not to a "T".

what is the difference between cbr and vbr? which method gives better quality and which is faster? and overall which one is most efficient in getting quality as well as speed? and what do passes in vbr stand for?

so if u get an extra disk like the one for pearl harbor, u start from scratch again? or is there a way to continue or somehow start only from that point? to do everything dvd2svcd takes like 12 hours for me. i sure hope there is a way to start from a particular point and not the beginning. i see the crash recovery option and was wondering if that was the way.

ps - can u tell me the final bitrates (audio/video) that you used when you are finished with both the pearl harbor disks?(i plan to get that next!)
