Does anyone have this software that they might be able to hook me up with so that I can try it out. I don't want to pay $3000 only to have the video not encode any better than the basic free x264 codec.

x264 is no way basic codec. I certainly has the most features of professional codecs.
If I'm not mistaken you can get MC encoder for free http://www.mainconcept.com/site/consumer-products-4/mainconcept-reference/information.html (with codecs in demo mode) and get codecs you are interested unlocked later.
