Hello,
Using VirtualDub I can save WMV as AVI without recompressing. Can I change AVI container into WMV container withou recompressing? Will WMV work fine with Xvid+ Lamep MP3 streams inside?

1. WMV is not a container !!!
2. WMV is a Video Format, the same way MPEG-2, MPEG-4 ASP and H.264 are Video Formats!
3. The container used for all ".wmv" files is ASF (Advanced Streaming Format), so it's actually WMV video inside ASF container!
4. Xvid is only a Codec, the Video Format behind Xvid is MPEG-4 ASP (the same applies to DivX)
5. As far as I know, MPEG-4 ASP video + MP3 audio can be stored in ASF conatiner
6. I don't know which tool can re-mux your AVI to ASF, but you should prefer the AVI or MP4 container anyway!
7. You can use MP4Box/YAMB to mux strems into MP4 container
8. You can use AVI-Mux GUI to mux streams into AVI container
9. WMV video can be stored in AVI container (at least older WMV versions), but why would anybody want to do that?

Thank you for your reply.
Ad6- I need to make a video watchable on my site. WMV is streamable, AVI is not. Is MP4 streamable? Will it play in Windows Media Player?
Ad9- to edit the video in Virtual Dub- like loselessy cut commercials, add a commercial etc.
New question- how can I mux streams into ASF?

MP4 definitely is streamable, but to be able to watch it, you need at least two things: You need a MP4 Splitter and you need a decoder for whatever video format is stored inside the MP4. Windows Media Player itself cannot decode anything, except WMV and MPEG-1. So you will need to install additional DirectShow Filters to make Windows Media Player support MP4 files and to decode the video. I'd recommend Haali's Media Splitter (splitter for MP4, MKV and OGM) + ffdshow-tryouts (decoder for almost every video/audio format in existence) for that purpose! The easier way of course is to use a "self-contained" player, such as MPlayer or VLC. This way you won't need any additional Codecs, Plugins, Filters or whatever at all...
Note: Even if your manage to mux your video into ASF container, Windows Media Player still won't play it without additional DirectShow filters! That's because Windows Media Player ships with an ASF splitter, but not with a suitable video decoder (except for WMV streams). So for streaming on a web-site, I'd definitely go with Adobe Flash and FLV (Flash Video). The latest Flashplayer (still in beta) even supports H.264 video now and it uses the MP4 container for that! So that's definitely a good way to go: The most powerful video format available today plus the software 99% of all users have installed anyway...

Hello!
For AVI to ASF container there is Vidtoasf, it's command-line.
