OK, this may get a little complicated, so bear with me.

I downloaded the "Super Speedway" HD video from the Microsoft website. It's a WMV9 video, with WMA9 audio, in 5.1.

Now, I play this on my laptop because my desktop is rather crap. The laptop only has 2 speaker output.

Playing the file in WMP10 results in the sound playing normally, and sounding "full". Playing in Winamp gives the same result.

Playing in Media Player Classic gives me muffled sound, like it's far out. It's not as full as playing in WMP10 or Winamp. MPC is using the WM DirectShow filters for both video and audio, and I'm not concerned at this stage about the video.

The only way I could get the audio to play the same in MPC as it does in WMP10 and Winamp was to add ffdshow to the chain, decompressing uncompressed audio in all formats, and ask it to downmix to 2 channels via it's "Mixer" tab, however I don't really like this situation because it means it's added to every video I play. It's just this video that sounds bad, everything else plays fine!

To double-check everything, I played it on another computer to which I have limited access, and it was fine in WMP10.

What's so different about WMP10 and Winamp's playing that MPC can sound so crap?

P.S: Before somebody says "UPDATE YOUR CODECS" I have Windows Media Format 11 installed, and is the latest that I can find. ffdshow is clsid's 1479 (I think) build, dated 09/09/07.

OK, I think I found the solution. Every other DShow player except MPC is setting the sound output to 2 channels. MPC sets it correctly. So how does it set it correctly, so to speak?
