i encoded a 30 mins show at 2280kbs CBR and wrote it to a cd-rw, i used tmpgenc and the highest quality setting but did not alter field order etc. in tmp. the svcd plays back perfectly in windvd but when i play it in my standalone pioneer 525 and there is a fuzz or type of ghosting around the image. is this my dvd player or my mpeg-II, i am at a loss for an explanation!
please help!

HI,

I always had the same ghosting effect on SVCDs (I used DVD2SVCD).
It is particularly noticeable when dark objects are on bright backgrounds. It gives some kind of 'halo' around people and objects.
Untilm now, I couldn't find any way to prevent this, so I decided not to care too much about it. I played with noise filters, temporal smoothers, quality factors, but nothing worked. So I'm waiting for some bright mind to find a solution :D

In the meantime, I usually lower my sharpness settings on my TV set and it usually helps a little.

Tell me if you fond some solution to this some day ! I'll let you know if I do !

Waldok.

i will do, its an interesting problem really, especially since pioneer standalones are meant to be the the best vcd/svcd etc. players. and since if the dvd player can correctly play mpeg-II from a dvd you'd think it wouldnt have any problem with a low bit rate svcd as long as it can read the cd-r fine! oh well, i guess you still cant beat vcd for reliability and compatibility :)

Well, I doubt the player has anything to see with the problem. It is more related to the MPEG encoding and the fact that you have to make it fit under 2600 kbits/s. This will produce artefacts and maybe the filters one use for getting rid of these artefacts are responsible for the ghosting effect.

I noticed the same behavior on some Satellite TV programs. DVD will of course not suffer from this... Maybe it is related to MPEG2 after all...

Bye
