View Full Version : quality varies from HT to HD profile, with the same settings?

I have to encode my captured old VHS-C tapes to divx.
I capture at 768x576 then deinterlace with avisynth securebob, resize to 640x480, letterbox and denoise with neatvdeo plugin in virtualdub.
I want them to be at the maximum possible quality but also playable on standalone divx players.

I thought the profiles function was only to show/hide some functions to the user, with the aim to aid him in the choise of the right settings.
But I tryied to encode the same video with the same settings but with two different profiles (home theater and high definition) and found that the HD profile produced a better but slighty less compressed output than the HT profile, with less blocking and more details.

My main question is: if I encode with High definition profile at the normal resolution of 640x480, the video will be playable on "divx home theater" certified players?

And the second question: The video is very unsteady due to its amateur nature so the average bitrate is very high, around 3000kbit/s. Standalone players could have problems playing it? I read that 4mbit/s is a common limit. How can I set a maximum peak bitrate setting? I don't see this option!

MY SETTINGS
1-pass quality based with target quantization=2
insane mode with enanched multithreading
adaptive single consecutive bi-directional
max keyframe interval 300 and threshold 50%
disabled QP and GMC
noise reduction off
quantization H263 optimized
psychovisual enhancements to shaping

HT will limit the peak bitrate to ensure compatibility with SAPs... HD will do the same but with higher buffer values since HD need higher bitrates. if you want the best quality just do not use profiles (at the cost of not producint SAPs compatible encodings).
