I watch a fair amount of mpeg4/vc1 material that just doesn't quite have the bitrate to overcome macroblocking in high motion scenes. I find the FFDShow Post Processing to be too strong, blurring most material far more than need be. I have it set to only deblock (H) and (V) luma, and have tried SPP as well. Are there any AVS modules to handle deblocking without as much reduction in picture quality? I use an LSF filter after I resize/denoise(for sources that need it) to sharpen stuff up already.

I suppose you could run it through DeBlock(23,4,3) or something...

Gradfun2db helps gradients, and in my experience can also serve as a decent deblocker. Note that it dithers instead of blurring.

deblock_qed is quite conservative about what it blurs, though you might have to play with its settings to get it to work on strong blocking. (I generally don't bother, I just turn on PP with strength reduced to 40% and then use debanding at the end, faster that way.)

I guess it's worth mentioning that the Deband filter in ffdshow is actually a straight port of the Gradfun2db AviSynth filter...
