Hi. I've been trying to get anamorphic video for the past few hours (I understood the general idea, but now I'm trying to grasp the concrete application). I have a question that I just can't seem to figure out though. Perhaps someone can help me.

I ripped Bourne Supremacy for editing purposes. It is the first anamorphic movie I have edited. I'm want to use HC Enc, FreeEnc, QuEnc, or some other free encoder to compress the edited version to a new mpeg2 video. None of these programs seem to have options for ratios other than 4:3 and 16:9 (save QuEnc's 1:1 and 2:2.21.

So, I'm wondering: if I encode to 4:3 (or do I need 16:9) ratio will the DVD players handle the black bars as necessary? Or is what I'm attempting to do impossible with free encoders (as this thread seems to indicate: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=128609) in which case the next question is: why hasn't any free encoder added support for setting the m2v's aspect ratio?

Also, if it is truly impossible to do this with free encoders, is there a relatively cheap encoder out there that _can_ do this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you ripped the DVD, you already have a 16:9 letterboxed file (m2v) or set of files (vobs).

Edit your frames keeping the resolution (usually 720x576 for PAL or 720x480 for NTSC), and then re-encode using QuEnc/HCenc/FreeEnc setting ratio @ 16:9.

:)

Bye
