The BBC seem to have started broadcasting everything as 5.1 even though all but the left and right channels are empty.
Is there a reason for this?
Is the result the same as a 384kb stereo file or is some bandwidth wasted?
I think I remember reading there was a now defunct application, Sonic SoundForge, which was able to extract channels into a new ac3 file without re-encoding. Is there another way (if necessary) of doing this with freeware tools?
