i have some avi files that i am trying to convert to dvd format. all of them converted with very little problem with winavi except for the ones that are in two parts. so i decided to try the virtualdubs (dub, mpeg-2, mp3-freeze) and they all say they can't find the audiodecompressor so i searched and found that i need to install ffdshow. so i did.

that is where it all breaks down for me. ffdshow appears to have installed without any problems but i don't have a clue what to do now because all the instructions say is, "install ffdshow".

but all the virtualdubs still say they can't find the audiodecompressor and all of the searching and googling i do just get me more and more confused including the posts that tell me to read other forum threads (which just explain what it does, now how to make it do what it does) or to read the readmefile that came with ffdshow (no read me or text or documents of any kind were included in the download of ffdshow)

i can't find a gui or anything that would let me make adjustments to anything, just a program file folder "ffdshow" on my C drive with 2 applications: makeavis.exe and uninstall.exe

i have tried entering the search "how do you use ffdshow?" but i can not find any instructions (just information on what ffdshow does) or else i am not recognizing them when i see them, just instructions for various problems people are having that aren't remotely related to the simple question, how is this used?

or at least, how do i make the virtualdubs recognize that ffdshow has all it needs?

You were given wrong information.

You need ACM audio codecs instead of ffdshow to solve your audio decompressor problem.

I suspect you need a ACM decoder for AC3 audio. Download it here: http://www.ac3filter.net

Hi!

If you're using the same computer that you used to create the .AVIs, you should already have the proper audio codec installed on that system...

looks like that was the problem. thanks so much for your help.

(setarip_old: hmmm...i think if that were true, i wouldn't have been having that problem, but who knows.)

I think it is not true, since you can quite easily rip a DVD, demux the original AC3 and remux it directly into an .avi file without needing the codec installed.

Hi!

The original poster stated:i have some avi files that i am trying to convert to dvd format. Therefore it would be illogical to think that he/she created the .AVIs from DVDs - because, if that had been the case, the original poster could simply duplicate or backup the original DVD.

My response to the original poster was based on the presumption that he/she created the .AVI - and had to choose both video and audio codecs in doing so...

True, and I apologize.
