I have mpeg2 files that I have recorded from television with my TV-Card.

I want to edit and convert this mpeg2 files to DivX.

Which is the easiest way, convert first and then cut it or cut (edit) first and then convert?

And which software should I use? (maybe somthing like mpeg2 to DivX converter with editing tools)

There are many free editing programs, such as Cuttermaran, that will edit without re-encoding.

You should edit first, since converting to MPEG-4 will create I-frames that can be as much as two minutes apart. That makes later editing very difficult, since most editors can only "cut in" at an I-frame.

Which software should you use? Whichever best suits your needs.

On Cuttermarans homepage: Before cutting you hav to demux the video stream. My advise is the program Project X.

I can't understand Project X. Do you know any easier software that fix the files so I can use Cuttermaran?

Maybe I can open the mpeg2 file in Virtual Dub Mod, edit and then save as avi (DivX). What do u think?

Thats interesting I was using solveig to trim my MPEG-4 s and faced that problem .Now I normaly record program to HD , then use vso, Then DVDshrink in reauthor mode to do my clipping, and/or shrinking.

On mpeg2 and HD .ts or .m2k files I generally use videoredo to edit them. Its a very easy program and it requires no audio muxing or remuxing. If there are errors in the mpeg2 or HD streams it will also fix them on the fly while processing the edits. And the best thing is it is fast. It processes the edits from a 2 hour show in about 3-5 minutes. The program is not free but not very expensive either $49.00USD. There is also a demo you can try. www.videoredo.com
