guys, i'm desperate here to find a multi-functional stand-alone dvd player. i've scoured the net and can't seem to find all features in one player. THEN i found the 'buyers guide' thread in this section's stickie, but it was a convoluted read as not all of my requests were posted, and my desired feautures don't seem to reside on any single dvd player (from what was listed.)

here's a list of compatible features i need:
cd-r, dvd-r, dvd+r, dual-layer, hdmi, 1080i/720p, divx/xvid, ac3/aac, and the ability to view pics via 'usb' from my digital camera. dual-layer compatibility would be nice, too.

optional, but prefered:
cdrw, dvd-rw, dvd+rw, vcd, svcd, wmv, real/quicktime, and home cinema system...?

also, i'm sort of a n00b so am i correct that most dvd players are hi-def? because i need that feature, too.

i know this is a tall order, but i can compromise if need be. and thanks for ANY suggestions:)

btw, please don't think i've been lazy in my search. i've been reading for four hours and i'm still too leery to just shell out the cash without being a bit more confident in my choice (the only thing close at this point is the 'elta 8882.)

You'll never find anything that supports Real/Quicktime. I know you said those were optional, but unless you build a home theater PC, you won't be able to play those formats at all.

No you are not correct in saying that "most dvd players are hi-def". Most DVD players don't support hi-def video at all, but many can upscale to high def resolutions (1080p/1080i/720p).

Kiss DP-1600 may be what you're seeking.

I own it's little brother the DP-600 myself and it's quite good now after the long awaited firmware that's fixed all the stuttering and that crap.

if you want all those features, why not just build a cheap htpc and hook it up to your tv? it could do everything you listed and more.

jshumate, when you say 'upscale' to 1080i, etc. what exactly do you mean -a software/firmware update?

tagert, is that kiss model hi-def?

legoman, yes i know a pc system is the best, but it's for my mom and she isn't pc savvy:( my system is all pc based and there is NO substitute!!!!

thank all of you for taking the time to post, and i still welcome any more suggestions:)

ps, doom9 rules!!!

You are unable to do a Google search on what "upscale" means because... ?

I really don't like people like you who are too lazy to look up anything on their own and just want to be spoon fed, but here is a link for you:

I'm finding it really hard to believe that someone who supposedly did research for 4 hours is unwilling to even do simple web searches. The answer to your Kiss question could easily be answered by a web search. I'm not going to bother replying to anything else you post until you demonstrate a willingness to do some work yourself.

whoa, whoa, WHOA! don't come snapping at me like some little dog who would normally get kicked, were it's owner not present!

i didn't google the word 'upscale' because i already know what it means, in it's traditional sense -and that's exactly how your reply read...

Most DVD players don't support hi-def video at all, but many can upscale to high def resolutions (1080p/1080i/720p).

had you been concise to the generality of my post you would have said 'model x will display at 1080i.' not only would that have answered my question in a much more productive way, but it would have saved time, as well as avoided this post i am now typing.

and you are wrong in accusing me of being lazy. this entire thread was a favor to someone else, just as all it's replies are. but i'm pretty sure i'm right about YOU... i've met many guys who love to play the 'mental giant' role. they throw a few hi-tech terms around before responding with the typical 'read, read, read' reply. i guess it makes them feel better about themselves...? but it doesn't do much to help the poster, and all those who read the thread looking for the answer they seek. and i'm not just talking out of my hat; i've owned 3 sites, and my latest site has 7,500+ members. it is inefficient to have threads that reach no conclusion... think about it, do you like to read an entire thread only to discover that you need to research the answer on google (even though you did that first?)

anyway, i felt i was polite -mom taught me to say please and thank you- and i DID do some homework before posting, so that is why i believe your negative post was unwarranted. so, if you think i'm your 'whipping boy' or a 'stepping-stone' you need to think again because you are 'barking' up the wrong tree!

ps. there's no need for you to reply unless you demonstrate some civility. oh, and doom9 still rules with, or without you.

i read that entire page, and although i thank you for the link, it contained nothing about 'upscaling.' and after 15 minutes of searching 'upscaling' -and adding various other terms to it- i still didn't find a definition. i see others also use this term, but the appropriate 'contextual' definition eludes me.

Maybe up-converting or up-conversion is the term that should be looked for. I see that OPPO uses that term...

jckitchens, great post! i think this thread concluded nicely with three good candidates: the Kiss DP-1600 (http://audiovisual.kelkoo.co.uk/sbs/127701/18110855.html) the elta 8882 (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers/elta-8882/2519) and the OPPO DV-981HD 1080p High Definition Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI (http://www.oppodigital.com/dv981hd/dv981hd_features.html) <-- my personal favorite:)

also, thank you lego ant tagert for your replies:)

in the interest of NOT being lazy i will post these into the divx/xvid buyers guide thread.

oppo dv-981hd sounded like a rather good unit but you can't watch dvd movies via hdmi unless your display is hdcp compliant.

Composite and s-video output only standard definition (and likely at standard interlaced framerates) and there is no component output on this player :( Unless you own a hdmi or dvi capable display with hdcp, this makes the upscaling function pointless

The fact that CSS has long been broken, one would think that not requiring a hdcp scheme on upscaled standard dvd playback would be logical from the consumers viewpoint !

Is there a multi capable player like the oppo with quality upscaling and component output ? I don't want to upgrade everything...

Cheers, Itchione
