View Full Version : Thinking About Buying "Philips DVP 5140"

I've read quite a few good reviews about this inexpensive DVD / DivX player and it uses a MediaTek chipset (which I hear is good).
My question is I read it only supports 15-character long filenames for DivX files. If this is true, will it simply cut off names of longer titles? Or will it not allow it to playback?

Cutting off the file names is a common trait with most players. It will still play the file for you...

Great! Also, are you able to playback XviD / DivX that are burned onto dvd? Like putting 6 on a dvd instead of 1 on a cd?

I recently picked up a DVP-5166k. It looks similar to the 5140 but it has a USB port. I noticed that a few people said that mp4 and aac are not supported on the 5140, but my 5166 plays them just fine.
So far I have only had good results from this player. Keep an eye out for the 5166 if you can get it.
Oh, and it plays multiple divx movies per disc.

The DVP5982/37 (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=24333) also has a USB port.
I just wish the Philips units will display longer filenames.

Do you know if it support chapter seeking, subtitles and audio track switching in MP4 files too?
Cheers

Yes it will, I own one and I really like it.
But Spaceman is right, it should how the complete name in the menu. Instead it only shows the first letters of the name. Once the movie is playing you can select "Display" on the remote to see the full name. This seems strange to me that it can read the full name off the DVD but can't display it in the menu.

@SMD, MediaTek based players (with firmware for MP4) support all the things said by you. In the firmwares is a bug when switching between the subtitles (created with Nero Recode): the video freeze when you reach the second stream. But with ff or rew, the problem is solved. If the desired subtitle stream is the second, is better to go for it from remote until the first line of subtitle is displayed on the TV screen.
IIRC, some time ago I wrote here that with a small hack in the firmware, these players can play Nero Digital Cinema profile which is not available in original firmwares. Cinema profile support 5.1 AAC.
enjoy,

@SMD, I have not tested those features. I have been busy so I have been limited to what I can test. Audio track switching works for me. It recognizes M4a files too which is kinda cool.

Thanks for the info guys...
Having players that support both DivX Ultra and NeroDigital are well worth recommending to others :)
