Well as Sony unfortunately tightens the noose on Toshiba with another huge blow (Target stores, the 2nd largest retailer in America, will carry only Blu-Ray players. This comes shortly after Blockbuster video's announcement in will only carry Blu-Ray movies), it looks like I may need to start diving into this format as well. Pioneer offers an internal Blu-Ray/DVD/CD drive for $275 so it shouldn't be too painful. There is ample info for going from HD DVD to WVC-1. How about going from BD to WVC-1? I am completely unfamiliar with the BD structure or its containers and how to demux them. I heard that EVOdemux works for blu-ray also... If that's true thats great. What about small details like frame rate? HD DVD is easy since the frame rate is always 23.976. Doesn't blu-ray vary? If so, how do you tell what it is in order to properly set it in your AVS? Also, how is the audio handled in comparison to DD+?

I figure as Sony gets closer to winning this, we might as well get this thread started.

Personally, I can't get vc-1 files to play really at all on my machine so I have had real roadblocks with HDDVD/.evo files. Some Blu-ray files are in VC-1 format obviously. All Bluray movies are just transport streams it seems, come over as .m2ts files. These can be MPEG-2, H.264/AVC, or VC-1. I have no problem with MPEG-2 or AVC files, and these are 23.97 fps. I have had no luck with transcoding DTS-HD master to AC3, so that is another issue.

When you want encode Bluray to WVC1 its easy.

Bluray with VC1 Video :

Just create a grf on the m2ts, no need to demux .

HaaliMediaSplitter(m2ts)-WMVideodecoderDMO

Bluray with Mpeg2
-load the m2ts into dgindex and create a d2v, load in into your avs

-Bluray with H264
Filesource(async)-SonicHDDemuxer-SonicCinemasterVideodecoder4.2

avs:
DirectShowSource("d:\video.grf",fps=23.976)

and encode it to WVC1 with wmcmd.vbs :) simple isnt it ?

For the Audio:

- use Xport to demux the Audio Track.
Or via Graphedit :
Filesource(async)-SonicHDDemuxer-Dump

- For demuxed lpcm.raw just use eac3to.exe to decode the lpcm.raw to 6 mono waves. Channelmapping works autom through eac3to.
-encode 6 mono waves to wma10pro with wmencoder

- AC3 on Bluray is standard AC3. USe Besweet to decode AC3 to 6 mono waves ( no DRC,no DialogNorm!)
-encode 6 mono waves to wma10pro with wmencoder

Thats all....litte bit less trouble compared with HDDVD Evo Container :)

Yes, this works--but on my system (XP MCE 2005, Core2Duo 6800/NVIDIA 7950 GT with 93.71 driver/WMP 11) I get very weird artifacts on many portions of the video. This was overcome with ffdshow handling the VC-1 decoding--but the video has some really bad jumps/stutters in certain portions. Nero Showtime plays back the VC-1 video perfectly from hard disk. Interestingly, PowerDVD plays it back choppy/stuttery from hard disk; very smooth though from Bluray disk directly.

I have had great results though with PowerDVD H.264 decoder for hidef AVC files. Better than the Sonic HD decoders.

If I could get a Directshow, non-artifact, non-stuttering playback of VC-1 files--I would feel as if I had really conquered something!

For now, I use NVIDIA Purevideo for MPEG-2, PowerDVD H.264 decoder for AVC...and I am waiting on a great solution for VC-1. (I know I am in the minority on getting good Directshow/WMP playback of VC-1.)

Ah thanks! I was hoping it was at least a little less headache oriented than HD DVD. A couple questions:

Is BD like HD DVD in that all the movies are 23.976 fps?
What do you use to determine the frame count and audio delay values like we do with EVOdemux and EVOs?
Are the transport streams split into multiple files like EVOs?

I might just have to grab that Pioneer Blu-Ray rom!

Same question. How do you determine the audio delay?

Yeah, what he said.
