i am interested in getting a DIVX enabled DVD player like the Samsung DVD-P171 (http://www.samsung.com/sg/products/dvdplayer/dvdplayer/dvd_p171.asp) and was curious as to how it works.
As in, u insert the dvd burned with .avi files that are DIVX/XVID encoded and how does the player play? Will there be a menu selection?
What if i have several files on that disc and want to choose a certain movie to watch only? How do i do that?
Anyone knows?
Thanks

Hi!
Most, if not all, such players will automaticlly display a basic active menu listing all of the DivX-compressed .AVIs on the DVD...

As setarip just stated, basically, once you pop in a data DVD into the unit, it will look like it did on your PC. :p You'll have a directory listing, including the subfolders, and you navigate it with your remote.
The only real difference among players in this respect, for the most part, is how much of the filename they display on the screen.
Some display things in 8.3 format (yuck), some are just fixed-width (truncating the end), and some will horizontally scroll the entire name, like my OPPO does.
You would just go select the file you want to play and hit select on your remote. From that point, most players just play everythng in the current directory starting from the file you selected.

Be warned that many options, such as QPel (quarter pixel) and GMC (Global Motion Compensation) can be problems for any standalone DVD player that supports Divx and your player may refuse to files encoded with these and a few other options. Every Divx file will not necessarily play in a standalone player. Other problematic things include packed bitstream, high video bit rates and resolutions greater than 720x576. It all depends on which decoding chip the player uses to decode Divx, with the older chips being more likely to have problems with all of the things I listed.
