View Full Version : Panasonic DVD-S53 (Win MovieMaker/xvid playback issues)

Recently I upgraded from the Philips 642/37 to Panasonic DVD-S53 mainly because of the S53's support for DL (dual-layer) discs. Most of my encodes are done from a miniDV camcorder (mainconcept dv codec) and encoded via Windows MovieMaker finalized in Virtualdub (xvid).
First, I've been trying to find out what chip the DVD-S53 uses without any success. Does anyone know?
The main concern is that when I use WinMM to add titles before and after the video is where the problem lies. Playback is adequate when only the basic title in WMM is used. When I used the animated titles (scrolling, fading etc.) playback severely stutters. On the 642-37 I never experienced this problem.
Reading some of the forum posts, I followed through by remuxing the clip in Virtualdub; setting both A/V to Direct Stream Copy; saving the file. The result was that video playback was flawless but audio was out of sync by as much as 5 sec.
To summarize basic problems:
1. What chipset does Panasonic DVD-S53 have?
2. Win MovieMaker titles (animated) cause severe stuttering
3. A/V sync issue after Direct Copy Stream (Virtualdub)
For all those who input; thanks in advance!

Hi!I upgraded from the Philips 642/37 to Panasonic DVD-S53 mainly because of the S53's support for DL (dual-layer) discs. Are you suggesting that the 642/37 won't play DL media?
I ask because I've had no problems playing either my burned DL Verbatim DVD+R media (Which continues to be the ONLY consistently reliable DL burnable media) or any DL pressed commercial DVD on my 642/37...

Mine plays DL media but intermittently freezes throughout some DLs; called Philips tech support, told 642/37 does not support DL media...

Although tech support may have stated an "official party line", once again, I've had no problems playing either my burned DL Verbatim DVD+R media (Which continues to be the ONLY consistently reliable DL burnable media) or any DL pressed commercial DVD on my 642/37.
My Pioneer 108, as do some other burners, AUTOMATICALLY performs bitsetting (critical for proper DL burning/playback). Other burners require that you manually set this function.
Also, I'd suggest you use IMGBurn for your DL burning...

My burner's the Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-1693S. I mainly use Nero v6.xx / Dvd Shrink but have not seen this bitsetting for DL burning you've mentioned. I will look into IMGBurn; is it better than Nero? Thanks

I will look into IMGBurn; is it better than Nero? For DL burning (including the all important proper placement of the layerbreak), definitely...

That's absurd, mostly all the commercial DVDs on the market are DL... I have a Phillips DVP630 (European model of DVP642) and plays perfectly DL DVD.
As setarip_old said, use Verbatim and IMGBurn. It should work!
Greetings! :)

1693 does supports bitsetting.
You can download the BookType / Bitsetting Utility (http://www.liteonit.com/global/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=153) from LiteOn's website (the program is first link on that LiteOn page), and you can set it that way.

Thank you; I knew nothing about this. What does bitsetting do? Is bitsetting only available in IMGBurn; I use Nero v6.xx alot.

If you use the LiteOn utility (and follow the pretty straightforward instructions), it'll tell the drive that everytime you burn a DL DVD+R (regardless of burning program), it should automatically set the booktype to DVD-ROM - which is a more compatible setting.
It's a one-shot deal - you use the utility once, then you shouldn't have to use it again.
