Hi!
I'm guessing that if you click on the TmpgEnc DVD author 3 "Help" dropdown menu and enter the word "subtitle", you'll be able to find the answer to your question...

VI. Subtitles editor
Subtitles edition Imports up to two subtitles streams from a DVD-Video, or creates personalized subtitles stream selectable from the menu or player's controls.
Layout settings Display area and text identation settings.
Font settings Font selection, style, color and effect.
thats the only info it gives, not what a .subtitle is... is it another name for a .sub maybe?
Open it in notepad and you'll see what is about. You can compare with a srt opened in notepad. You'll see the difference between them.
.subtitle is a temporary file used only by TDA and is usable only saved from TDA for a later use or if you want manually modify some parameters in it using notepad.
enjoy,
Mtz

If you don't know, TMPG DVD Author 3 has the great feature of importing DVD in Source Wizard. This import filter is able to import the video segment, the audio segment, the SUBPICTURES and the CHAPTERS POINTS. So you can use VOBSUB subtitles in a modified version: you can mux this VOBSUB by converting to SUP with Subtitle Creator and then use MuxMan/IFoEdit/ReJig to create a temporal DVD. Now you can import this DVD into TMPG DVD Author by using 'Source Wizard': video, audios, subpictures and chapter points. It is not the panacea but is useful to reauthor those old DVDs with ugly Menues...

Hmm thats sounds very useful, and gives me a great idea how to do this.
Use TDA to author the dvds i have (with dual audio) don't make it with menus, then use Sub creater to put the idx/sub files into the file, then pull it up in TDA, and use the subtitles in there
