View Full Version : SVCD DVD Player List (add yours here)

I'll keep the list in the newbie faq (second post)
Actually it's good that it's been slow since we all need to reconfirm if your standalone DVD player can do subtitles or not.

Please post ones you personally KNOW and have tried that play SVCDs on CD-R media. Include SUBS [state either (S)SVCD, (C)CVD or (SC)both please] if it plays selectable subtitles.

@markrb

there are hundreds of WRONG reports in that site. Just because of this mrbass starts this thread.

btw:

Philco DVP2100

plays DVD, SuperVCD (no (C) and no (S) ), CVD, HDCD, MrOKO, VCD, mp3.

edit: it plays fine any kind of CD-R and CD-RW. Even the cheapest ones.

thanks for the contribs...keep 'em coming. BTW if your player is already listed in the CONFIRMED by DVD2SVCD forum members you don't need to list it. You can but it'll save me time by not having to verify.
VCDHELP list is comprehensive, etc. It lists Pioneer as supporting SVCD subtitles which is wrong, thus I wanted to start fresh. Plus our dinky, humble list's emphasis is only on SVCD...not OKO (whatever that is), VCD, CD+G or whatever else format. And must play on CD-R media...not just CD-RW. Oh yeah...should I list (A)multiple audio tracks. Don't all SVCD capable DVD players support up to 4 audio tracks? That's the SVCD spec I believe. So it'd be pointless to list that...or should I?
This list is only temporary till DVD2SVCD gets his database setup. Well he might do it someday. I'll be surprised if he finds the time though.

Mozart
4th January 2002, 19:49
I'm sorry mrbass. I just edit my post:D

FYI: OKO is some kind of karaoke CD where you can fit almost 100 lyrics+sound. Only for Chinese, I guess.

mrbass
4th January 2002, 20:17
no need to be sorry...list all the supported features if you so desire. I was just stating where the list emphasis would be. (S) (C) (SC) and plays SVCD on CD-R. I'm sure if DVD2SVCD starts his own database it'll be much more comprehensive and more accurate than the vcdhelp.com dvd player list.

I need to know which type of subtitles (S) (C) or (SC)?
If you've only had a chance to test one then just list that for now until you get a chance to try the other. If using an old build with I-author that'd be (C) type subtitles.

Apex AD-600A

Stock (A8 firmware, DVD-ROM drive firmware updated):

Chapters NO, Subtitles (S) only.

(Does not play chapters as generated by DVD2SVCD. If I delete the PBC tag from the xml file and rerun vcdxbuild, the new image plays fine. Plays (S) subtitles but does not play (C) subtitles; just tested this. (S) subtitles don't play perfectly; some text comes with underlines of various sizes. Still looking into this. May be able to fix it by adjusting the bitmap size.)

(With DVD-ROM upgraded to Hitachi GD-2000, plays chapters, but image breaks up frequently, even for low bitrates.)

Hello

well my toshiba sd-210E plays vcds on cd-r(74/80/90mins) and cd-rw,
it plays s-vcds on cd-r (74-80mins) and cdrw(80mins).
s-vcds with two audio tracks are okay too, swap tracks with Angle
button on the remote.
I tested CVD subtitles but can't get'em to show. i'll try SVCD subs later and let you know.
(later = in a couple of hours)

BTW i have the following settings for bbmpeg mux :
413 ms for video, 180 for audio 1, 180 for audio2 so i get lip sync

okay, can't get [S]vcd subs to show either, but chapters are okay

Apex AD-800: Nothing
Couldn't get this to play any SVCD, either on 2 different CDR brands, or CDRW, with or without subs, with our without chapters -- nothing. But I was in Circuit City and only spent a few minutes so I could be wrong.

Apex AD-5131: Revised
Initially, I was pretty excited about this player, after trying it in the store. When I got the unit home, however, it didn't work -- subtitles were, strangely, offset to the left, halfway off the screen. I returned it. I have to say (S-no, C-?). Another user has reported (C-no).

What type of subtitles (C) (S) or (SC)? Not going ask again. Next time will just ignore and not put anything for subs. I'm taking away the (subs?) and just wait till those owners reverify. Remember we all have so much time so if it takes you a month to verify which subtitles so be it. Just post your player. Thanks for the contribs up to this point. It might take me a couple of days to update it sometimes.

I think Apex is doing something funny because I tried this one in the store, then bought the player a month later and the SAME disks i tried in the store do not work(subtitles) on the one I purchased. perhaps there is some way of distinguishing different versions of this player because as far as I can tell, they have changes something.

Apex AD-660 - Plays SVCD, Subtitles(SC) and Chapters

Apex 703 - SVCD, Subtitles (SC) and Chapters.

Apex 1500 - SVCD (Don't know about subs or chapters as I bought this as a gift and checked the SVCD capability).

Typically, I have found that if the standalone has a PC style DVD player (only way to know is to open it up :D ) then it will play SVCD/VCD's, do subs and chapters. Usually this is the case with the so-called "bargain brands" like Apex, Daewoo, etc.

Brand names are pretty much a "hit and miss" affair. I think the rationale of all of this stems from the fact that VCD/SVCD is the dominant video form factor in the Far East (China) and so these players must accomodate this format and not sell at all. In the USA, DVD is the accepted format and few people here play VCD/SVCD's, thus the Brand Name players focus on that to the detriment of VCD/SVCD capabilites. Also, the MPAA may have something to do with that as well.;)

Another one that plays SVCDs (perfectly)

JVC XV-F85

What is nice about this DVD player is that it is Progressive Scan and it is a 7-Disc (yes.. 7). That is really nice because you can put in a 3 CD SVCD and it will automatically switch to the next CD and continue the movie (no more getting up after each CD)

I took my SVCD's back to circuit city and tried them out on the display player and the subs worked fine, this is from an older I-author-version of DVD2SVCD, so I returned mine and ordered a new one, hopefully it's just a flaw in the particular one that I bought and not a new and "improved" version of the 5131.

oh, also, my friend's APEX AD-500WM plays the same disk fine(that's C for sure, i'll be trying out standard subs when I get my new player.) also, chapters work fine on this player as well.

To add to what twistee said about the pioneer dv-344, it does not play either type of selectable subtitle. It does support selectable audio tracks.

There seems to be a combined audio-video bitrate of 2600 or a bit more (and that includes all audio tracks) otherwise audio (and also video) gets jerky. 2500 video with 128 audio resulted in audio distortion in the small sample I used. But 2400 video with 224 audio works fine (I use it all the time). 2100 video + 224 audio + 192 commentary seemed fine in the small sample I used but of course the video bitrate is too low (so no point in using more than one audio track).

My player will only play VCDs... (MPG-1 Streams)...

It "technically" plays an SVCD disc, however, the sound/pictures stutter. I have verified this on two separate identical players, and two separate SVCD discs of different movies. However, if you play the movie in 2X speed, sound is fine and the playback is almost normal! (as long as you don't mind synched sound/images!) HA!... btw, this is ridiculous!

I have not tested subtitles.

As far as various player options go, it also offers MP3 playback, WMA playback, DVD+RW, CD-R/RW Playback (ability to play back may depend on recording conditions), Video CD, and Compact Disc.

Play everything

DVD, VCD, SVCD, CDDA, MP3.
SVCD Subtitled: Both (Cvd & SVCD)

Very easy hack to multi-region (which I've done & save the extra $40-$50).

The Sampo 611 also has PAL/NTSC NTSC/PAL video converter built-in, so it's very convenient. I can watch PAL VCD/SVCD clip on my NTSC TV with a simple push button on the remote control. I assume it would also do NTSC playback on Pal TV.

This only thing I did not check is it Macrovision-free, but since I'm not going to record to VHS, why need Macrovision-free?!!

Very happy with this unit, and it's cheap too.

For SVCD, this unit can handle 4 Audio Streams & 4 Subtitles. I did 3 & 3, and it work fine.

Many standard VCDs jumpy / won't play (has something to do with TMPGEncs Scene chane detection?). If the making of an standard VCD that plays OK is a BIG TASK, then how about making a working XVCD?

I made an NTSC SVCD with (SVCD) subtitles, but I only managed to play subtitles once after pressing a lot of buttons on my remote. Unfortunately I don't remember how I got there.

Now no matter what I do it wouldn't play subtitles.

Why could it be? I tried the files that one can download that are known to have good subtitles - does not play them either. I have the latest official firmware.

May be it is the settings?

One remark. I've got the Philips dvd-751 too. Make sure you set the PBC option off in the DVD menu or else you won't be able to use the menu (and thus you can't select subtitles).

Philips DVD 710:
CD-R (problems with 90/99 min CD-Rs),CD-RW perfectly
SVCD 2 audio tracks, no subs, chapters
Issues: audio/video desync playing SVCDs muxed with bbMPEG (no desync when same ESs are muxed with TMPGEnc)

Pioneer 444
CD-R, CR-RW, sometimes read problems when recording speed too high
SVCD, 2 audio tracks, no subs
MP3, but only 8-characted long names, always sorted alphabetically, which makes problems when whole CDs are compressed into folders (you must use numbers to keep tracks order)
Issues: SVCD sensitive to low bitrate. When bitrate below 900 (?) kbps, jerky output. Probably muxing with I-Autor solves this problem.

VCD 2.0 - O.K.
- PBC works fine

SVCD - O.K. with some problems
- max bitrate problems like any other Philips has (see this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20709&pagenumber=1)
- subs: SVCD style work fine, but work only if created with no PBC option on CD image tab plus vcdxbuild used. Using subs freezes are more possible. See the above thread regarding GOP sizes.
- audio: only tried with one track, both 44100 and 48000 are working. no sync problems.
- chapters: PBC works fine, but for time and subs it has to be switched off.
- time displayed when PBC on: incorrect, cca 75% of RT
- FF/RW: causes switch off when SVCD length exceedes 40 min. Possible FW bug - not corrected in v7.22.
- other: when playing SVCD subs sometimes appear automatically regardless they were swithced off.
- media: CD-R 74, 80 and CD-RW, 74, 80 tested and play well.

JVC XV-S60BK:

I just update VCDhelp list with my finding for this player:

DVD:

This a good quality DvD player. Lots of nice features. I have nothing but good thing to says when playing commercial bought DvD`s

VCD:

Works like a charm. (I dont like regular vcd, but this unit play them very well)

XVCD:

Made several XVCD (min: 250, avg: 1200, max 2400) and they all work perfectly

SVCD:

Just made a SVCD from the movie Bounce (DvD rip) with DVD2SVCD with 2 audio tracks. (min: 200, avg 1785, max 2400). It work perfectly and I was able to swap the audio tracks on the fly except on the last chapter.

Good unit unless you already have some SVCD with avg bitrate above 1850. If not, just make the new ones with those settings: DVD2SVCD settings, put max birate at 2400 and max average bitrate to 1850. no big deal here since even at 1785 avg, it was hard to tell the difference between the original DvD and the SVCD.

Subtitles dont work.

Chapters works:
But had strange results when using equal length chapters with DVD2SVCD. I press next sometimes and end up 2 or 3 chapters BEFORE the current one. Very wierd. DvD ripped chapters works fine.

Norcent DP201 (http://www.norcent.net/productDetail.asp?ID=10&CAT=DVD/VCD%20PLAYER)

VCD:
Works great, but is picky at what type of disc you burn on. If you use cheep quality CD-Rs, the video gets really bad and the sound starts squeeking and poping. Recommend Memorex CD-R or CD-RW. (The only brand I buy now. More money, but well worth it anyways.) Never use imation. Time jump works with any burned VCD (ala Nero). Chapter support as well (VCDEasy).

SVCD:
Doesn't allow switchable subs whatsoever. :( But it does allow switchable audio tracks. Not picky at what type of CD-Rs you use. Time jump only works if you have chaptered the SVCD.

DVD:
I have not given this thing much of a test for them. I don't have very many DVDs. I download or convert (from avi) most of my VCD/SVCDs. I basically bought this thing for them anyways. But it does play DVDs fine. It's even has region selector to all regions and NTSC or PAL selector. As well as audio settings.

This DVD player has one major flaw. It overheats. Though, after overheating, it doesn't bother DVD playback, it does bother VCD and SVCD. You start getting artifact problems and sound click/pops. Like you would with poor CD-Rs. After you turn it off and leave the tray open for a bit for a cool down, it's fine again. Even with the non switchable subtitles (I think burned subs are ok, since I'm going to be watching subtitled anime on it anyways.) and overheating problems, I'm very happy with it. It only cost me $20 to buy it. ($70-$50 voucher I had.)

this si a really great mpeg2 (SVCD)player.
no problems with variable mpeg2 streams, and audio at 48 khz.

chapters, work, when selecting, use chapters be DVD in DVD2SVCD.
Subtitle does not working
2 Audio Track never Testet.

Bitrate kann set at a min to 300kb/s with no problems, the max Bitrate should be set not higher than 2550 kb/s when selecting 224 kb/s for the audio.

Standard VCD plays perfectly, testet up to 1600 kb/s, and the panasonic encoder, video plays fine, but sometimes i get audio freezes at that bitrate, so a return to max 1400 kb/s and 192 kb/s Audio, and i works good, the only problem is then, that when you fast forward you XVCD the audio is lost, then you have to stop the movie, and press play again, and the audio is back, and perfect in synch.

I think its one of the best SVCD player, who pioneer ever build, and i woulkd like to pay a 2 player of this, but its not availibly on the market.

[+] SVCD chapters

[-] SVCD subtitles

You might wanna add this to your list and/or the DVD2SVCD FAQ:

most current DVD players are advertized as being able to play SVCDs. This does NOT automatically mean they also can play SVCDs with subtitles, several audio tracks or chapters. I've already seen some players that play only 1 subtitle track or 1 that is totally messed up, others could not switch between audio streams.

I've been told this feature (subtitles, dunno bout audio streams) is chipset-depending. Players with ESS or Winbond-chipset (maybe others too) can playback subs. Problem is, you won't see this anywhere on the player nor the manual. So the only thing you can do when you buy a new player is to burn 1 SVCD and 1 mp3 CD and check them out at the store.

Thanks for starting this thread mrbass
I havent been able to find a decent stand alone that will play my SVCDs dispite what VCDHelp says. Everyone should include what programs and media along with DVD2SVCD they are using to make copies of their dvds. It would be great!!

Ive been using DVD2SVCD, TMPG, NERO and cheap Imation CDs - final results look great with powerdvd.

Ive tried a JVC XV523GD - stuttered, blockly
Ive also tried a couple of samsungs that said they would play and didnt. I live in Germany right now so I am limited to what I can buy unless I have one shipped to me. Any suggestions?? I know I can use better cds too.

Hi everyone.

I live in France (who cares???) and I own currently a Pionner DV343 (same as DV340 but in black). It has been made region and macro free by the shop were I've purchased it.

What I have 2 say: this thing eats every cd-r I've thrown in (even the cheapest ones).

It works reading: dvd, cd, cd-r audio, vcd, svcd (with switchable audio) and PBC chapters works 2. Never tried subs 'til now because everybody says it won't work. I'll know it soon cause i've just tried a svcd with svcd subs. Let's pray but I do not have much hope for this... I assume also that it reads dvd-r (it's a Pionner or what???).

I must say that every svcd I made was done using DVD2SVCD and then burned with NERO at speed x4 with my TEAC cdwriter. I did not even downsample audio to 44khz (works perfectly at 48 so...)

For Vcd's, the few I made (Xvcd's in fact) were done with DVDx and also burned with NERO on the same cdwriter.

Conclusion: buy a Pionner for the price of a Tokai!!!

It has been a while since this thread was updated. I am hoping to revive it because I need a player that will play CVD subtitles. The problem is I can't find any of the players knows to play SVCD subtitles for sale anymore. New generation players play SVCD just fine, but they don't support subtitles. Clicking the subtitle button during SVCD playback results in the "NO" on-screen icon. I tried 3 players this past week - Apex 1200, CyberHome 320, and Daewoo S151. No luck on any of them. I suspect it has something to do with the MediaTek chip that is widely use by the current gen of DVD players. They may look different, but they all behave the same. Coincidence, or not.

BTW. I am buying a new player to supplement my old-reliable Apex 500W. It plays all CD-R /RW media I burned, even the cheapest of the cheapies. For SVCD, 4 selectable CVD subtitles, and 4 selectable audio tracks work flawlessly. SVCD subtitles, however, works only if I press many buttons on the remote, sometimes.

On my Apex 5131, the subtitle button does not work, just like the current gen DVD players. However, it plays CVD subtitle 1 if present, and there is no way to turn it off. It is works kind of like the permanent subtitle.

If anyone purchased a DVD player that plays CVD subtitles recently, please post the info.

Thanx.

I picked up an AMW v99 from Best Buy the day after Thanxgiving for $19.99 ($39.00 - $20 rebate). I wasn't expecting much for $19.99. but to my surprise, this little gem functions exactly the way I want. It plays SVCD on CD-R (all kinds on cheapies) and CD-RW (OfficeMax) with 4 selectable (C)CVD subtitles. The most I tried are 2 subtitles and the switching works flawlessly.

I also bought a Polaroid DVP-1000 from Best Buy ($49.99 - $10 rebate). Internally, it is exactly like AMW v99, even got the same remote. The difference is the case and component video output which the AMW v99 lacks.

In summary, both units play:
* SVCD with selectable (C)CVD subtitles made with DVD2SVCD and burned with Nero. VBR up to standard bit rate.
* SVCD with animated menus made with Pinnacle Studio 8. CBR at standard bit rate.
* DVD -R (Imation) made with DVD Decrypter ripped to ISO and burned from ISO.
* DVD +RW (Sony) made with Pinnacle Studio 8.
* VCD video with menus made with Pinnacle Studio 8.
* VCD photo stills with menus made with Ulead DVD Pictureshow.
* Data CD with only JPEG files.
* Data CD with only MPEG files.

** NO (S)SVCD subtitles.

Sorry, I don't play MP3 on these machines and I don't encode beyond standard bit rates, so I can't report on those.

All and all, I am extremely please with these machines.

NOTE: The AMW v99 looks different than the Amphion S99, and the region free hack does not work on it. So, I don't they are the same under the skin and work the same way.
