View Full Version : feature request: "force interlaced"
contrary to some threads here about wrongly detected progressive material and "disable interlaced" option in RB I need exactly oposite - force interlace.
Why?
Because RB always wrongly detects my most favored channel DVB-S recordings.
It's a PAL TV, interlaced 100%, just from time to time there are "progressive" flags in video (just flags, video is still interlaced) and RB is always wrong marking it as progressive.
So having something like "force interlace" will help me a lot (even some hidden setting).
For now, RB is useless for such video.
(btw. recordnig are performed using Dreambox - a HDD satellite receiver which records complete transport stream of a channel)

I can't agree with your assessment. DVD-RB get's its information from the stream itself. It pulls the information from the PICTURE_ENCODING_EXTENSION. The "progressive" flag is only set if virtually the entire stream is marked as progressive.
If the flags are incorrect in the original (as they would have to be), I would suspect it is caused by whatever software or device you are using to build the original stream (Dreambox?). Is the transport stream being converted into DVD somewhere?
no jdobbs, trust me on this one.
You haven't seen what can be found on european sky.
It's exactly like I described, false hybrid video which RB wrongly detects as progressive.
There are no non-hdtv TV stations in european sky with progressive video!

You're missing the point. DVD-RB isn't misinterpreting anything. If the source is interlaced and DVD-RB is reading it as progressive -- it means the flags in the PICTURE_ENCODING_EXTENSION header are set incorrectly. That's not an error in DVD-RB -- it's an error in the source.

Maybe the OP can use Restream to fix the flags.
jdobbs:
Yes, yes, you are 100% right. RB is not faulty or crazy, simply fooled by an incorrect stream so if there is a reason for already implemented "force progressive" I simply thought that "force interlace" is also justified.
How RB will handle real hybrid video, let's say 60% progressive and 40% interlaced ?
Forcing interlaced we are on the safe side. Otherwise processing such video as progressive will lead to a nasty chroma erros in interlaced part.
Whatever, you are the boss, your's is final and RB is still and will be a fantastic product :)

Of course, restream will do the job. Even better - ProjectX demuxer can do it during a demux process so if I really want RB doing a job there have to be some preparation before authoring.
Guys, thanks for comments!

If it was 60/40 it would be handled as interlaced. It has to be well above 90/10 before DVD-RB will assume it is a progressive stream. By the way, the flags are reapplied exactly as they were found.
I can add a "forced interlaced" option -- but I worry that people will use it when they really shouldn't (they do that now with the "force progressive").
