Hi everyone. I'm a long time reader but a first time poster. ^_^

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same problems as I am.

First I'll begin with my computer specs:

Processor: Opteron 170 (dual core) 2.0Ghz, overclocked to 2.7Ghz.
Ram: 1024MB
Graphics card: Radeon x1950 Pro 256MB

Ok, so the problem is that whenever I play a DVD and use an external subtitle file (.ssa/.ass/.srt etc...), the subs are always off sync. I've edited the subtitles to fit the proper framerate, which obvious helps, but the subs are still off sync. I've checked the VMR9 properties during playback and the framerate is always around 23, but changing by a slight bit every second (not NTSC 29.97fps, which is the format of the DVD) and the jitter is at 8 (on the hard drive) and usually around 12ish (also changing a slight bit now and then) when run off the DVD itself. It never skips frames BTW.

I've tried everything I can think of and I just can't get it to work! In the end, I had to rip the DVD, slam it into a avisynth script WITH the subtitles, so that it's all running out of the script and not using the MPC subtitle loader. Using the script, I set the framerate to 23.976 and I modify the subtitles to run at the same framerate. By doing this, it plays back properly, without the subs going out of sync, but it's a major hassle!

Does anyone know what can be done to sync the subs without having to go through all this ?

Any help will be appreciated. Many thanks in advance. ^_^

Hi!whenever I play a DVD and use an external subtitle file (.ssa/.ass/.srt etc...), the subs are always off sync.if you're saying that you're playing the actual DVD (on a DVD-ROM reader or a burner) and accessing the subtitles from your hard drive, I'd speculate that, regardless of the software player, maintaining synchronization between the two different pieces of hardware might be well nigh impossible...

Have you tried using other software players?

Also tried DVD Subber and it didn't work out. =(

But even if I rip the DVD to my HD and mount the image on Daemon Tools, the subs are still out of sync. =/

And what if, rather than mounting, you play the hard drive version with VLC?

That one I haven't tried.

Not sure I will use it for this movie anymore, but I'll keep it in mind for the next one. Thanks.

Why would you NOT try playing the hard drive version of "this movie" with VLC?

It happens on all DVDs, and the frame/jitter rates are always different.

I already erased the image of the DVD and don't feel like ripping it again for the 4th time in a row. Plus I installed VLC a few years ago and was not impressed. Yes, I admit that I don't actually want to install it again, but if I get frustrated enough with my next DVD then I just might just do it.

And BTW, regular xvid/divx/h264 files are also slightly off, with a jitter of anywhere between 1-4. It's obviously not as bad as the DVDs though and it hasn't caused any problems yet.
