Hello-
Long time user of DVDRB (since at least v .52) here. I have backed up many, many, many DVDs and have seldom had problems over the years. Kudos to Jdobbs for the amazing work.
Anyway, I have recently tried backing up 2 DVDs and they seem to do process fine, but when I play them back on my standalone and conventional TV the playback looks kinda jerky where there is movement but ONLY in the main movies. Menus (some with animation) look fine. They seem a bit 'off' from the originals when played on my notebook but nowhere near as bad as on the TV. Originals play fine on both.
Okay, an admission on this one, it's a pair of pron films so no screen shots will be posted. :devil: :rolleyes: But knowing that I'm essentially positive that this was shot on video not film. Could I be dealing with a BFF issue? If so how can I tell? I've done a bit of searching but found no definitive answer. (and if you can also tell me for future reference a surefire way of verifying whether something is interlaced or not I'd be even more happy!!)
And also how do I go about fixing the problem? Do I have to re-encode it through CCE or is it something that can be just be fixed and the rebuild be run again? I have the working directories for both jobs still on my HD.
Any help would be appreciated. I'd really like to get all this stuff off my hard drive (no pun intended). :thanks:

okay, just as an aside...a quick search shows I am only the 2nd person on the DVDRB forum to admit to RBing some porn. sigh. LOL

There's a program called Restream (do a web search for it or get it at http://www.dvdrhelp.com and other sites) that will allow you to modify MPEG header information without re-encoding. You can change the field order in the header with this program and not have to re-encode anything.
If I see jerky video, I just assume a field order problem has happened and it's almost always the case. Use a program like the Teco Bit Rate Viewer (http://www.tecoltd.com - the free version will work fine for this) or GSpot and see what it thinks the field order is on your video and then change it to the opposite using Restream and see if it plays OK.

But DVD-RB is fully capabable of handling BFF streams. Did you do any type of pre or post processing?

@harpseal
Is it very rapid vibrating motion when there is a lot of horizontal movement on the screen? That's what you normally would expect to see from field mismatching.
Hmm... now that I think about it, what kind of porn wouldn't have lots of horizontal motion? ;)

Nope, didn't do anything other than transfer original DVD to HD and run through the RB process as normal. Just as I've done in the past. No pre or post processing of any kind. The source version on the HD plays fine, the rebuilt one looks weird...worse on an actual TV. I was wondering if maybe the movie was just flagged wrong or something. I'll grab GSpot (okay, there's just too many innuendos in this thread!!!!!!! :p ) and see what is says about the source and final output (I have used it before but didn't remember it telling me about field order...I've used restream before a long time ago too.).
I have the log, ecls and stuff from one of the encodes if it helps.

Depending upon which version of CCE you're using you'll find that BFF is handled in different ways. In older versions the lines are shifted and the output is TFF, the newer versions can actually encode BFF. The point being -- you may have a mismatch on the older versions (between source and destination), even when it is done correctly.

Okay, so for some reason GSpot isn't giving me video info for the VOBs. Maybe cause I haven't installed a 'real' software DVD player on my newish Vista machine? Anyway Teco BRV is telling me in the original source some of the VOBs are TFF and some are BFF. And even within VTSes they sometimes switch (i.e. VTS_03_0.VOB will be TFF but then VTS_03_1/2/3/etc.VOB will be BFF). Is that proper? In the rebuilt version all VOBs are TFF except for one. Weird.
I'm just picturing the Release Note for 1.26.2: "In certain instances of crappilly authored porn DVDs field order values may be improperly detected."

@jdobbs
I did these (and other normal DVDs with SP2. I still have one or two of the previous releases if you think they would fair better. I'll have to dig for them on my old computer and get them re-installed.
btw. you rock. I need to send you more $$.

The fact that VTS_XX_0.VOB is TFF while the other parts aren't isn't unusual -- that's the menu VOB and it is usually encoded separately.
I'll take a re-look at the SP2 code and make sure it handles BFF correctly.

Ahh... got it. I was on the right track. There is a line in the code that looks for the CCE version to see which way it should handle BFF -- since SP2's version is less than "2.69" it was assuming an older version of CCE and was dicking up the frame flags.
I've fixed it for the next release.
Interesting that no one had noticed this before. I guess that just shows how rare BFF sources actually are.

ROTFL. Too many chuckles on this 4th of July. Heck i just noticed even the thread name is funny. I feel like I'm on an episode of Are You Being Served? with the possible double entendres.

Hooray. I loaded up CCE SP 2.7, rebuilt as normal, and all is well again. No more...um...jerking.
:thanks:

I know this is off-topic but I just installed Vista and I don't get a preview after preparation like in WinXP. Is there a way to fix this problem?

Doesn't help you - but similar here for WinXP ....
