Apparently my one friend installed ffdshow onto his computer and Sony Vegas 7.0 seems to be able to decode it. I did the same thing as him only to find that mine could not!

Does anyone have any idea why and/or have any solutions to this problem?! I have tried looking myself but i dont know much about ffdshow yet.

:thanks:

After going through a lot of pain and searching the net in every possible corner of it I managed to have Sony Vegas 7.0 reckognize every possibe codec around.

First you don't need any codec packs (K-Lite, Ace Megacodecs {very bad}. because they are very dangerous for your computer. The only codec(s) you need to make Sony work is FFDShow MPEG-4 and AC3 Filter.

The other thing I had to do was copy all the plugins from SoundForge FileIO Plug-Ins and copied them to Sony Vegas FileIO Plug-Ins.

DO NOT OVERRIDE ANYTHING THAT IS THE SAME. KEEP HITTING NO AND IT ONLY COPIES 2 OR 3 FOLDERS, YOU SHOULD BE DONE.

You are still going to have problem opening a file XVID that you have just converted in Vegas but AVIC to change FourCC headers. After you import the XVID file to AVIC you just change both values to DIVX.

Even though nobody responded to this thread, I hope that this will be of some use in the future to anyone who runs into this problem:helpful:

If you don't want ffdshow to decode h.264 or xvid just disable them from ffdshow--->Codecs--->Format--->disable.

Sony Vegas 7 makes use of Mainconcept/Elecards Decodeing Engine (more features then ffdshow libavcodec @ the moment) but only for compatible containers and .avi is not seen as one for H.264 in the area Sony Vegas is used normaly ;)

What does count? I checked the site and MPEG-4 isn't listed at all, nor is MP4 or TS. Is mpeg-4-in-mpg a hidden feature?

You can use ffdshows MakeAVI's with an .avs file and it should work fine.

i've noticed that if you install Xvid codec, vegas doesn't open mpeg4s anymore. Uninstall Xvid codec and then it works again... something in the Xvid codec is messing with vegas...
