When I play an IFO or VOB file in MP Classic it plays fine and all, but when I turn on a subtitle stream it gets a little weird.

First of all, I can't use any of the MPC subtitle options, I assume the MPEG splitter is taking over and not passing the stream to it. So following that train of thought I tried out 3-4 different splitters to no avail.

Second, while the subs do show, they appear to be rendered at low res and are blocky (see next pic)

Third, there is a point in the video where the subs overlap for a while then form there on, the rest of the subtitles are out of sync. I tried the same file on VideoLan and it played fine. (see pic)

I'm out of ideas, I tried to change the splitter, tried to use vobsub, but I think that only works with directshow and as far as I know this is not using direct show... Help!

Have you tried a different build of Media Player Classic. Unfortunately, the numbering system is woeful, there are dozens of builds indistinguishable as they are all 6.4.9.0.

I suggest you try Casimir's homecinema edition. Its the latest base build, plus lots of other nice features, such as remembering file and DVD positions for next playback, EVR display mode for XP/Net3 and Vistam etc etc.

I suggest you use EVR custom display mode, with 3d surfaces, bicubic 0.60, and directsound output. Don't select Direct3d full screen, it does have advantages but it can make usage harder (and it doesn't work in window mode as it plays the video through like a game)! Anyways, you can then fiddle with the pixel shaders etc.

Worth a try... (set the evr buffers to say 10)

Also... I have also seen this, the problem I had was two subtitle filters were loading at the same time. You need to disable one!
