Good Tutorial on Segmenting a large file to smaller ones?

I have a dvd that is one long 7 hour video that I want to break up into smaller episodes and was curious where a good tutorial is for this?
Would it be best to use virtualdub? Would be easier to use autogk and covert it to a single avi then use another program to work with the large file there?
Should I be posting this in a different forum?

I would make separate projects using DGIndex. Then encode each project separately as you wish.

Found the answer to the my problem. Someone on another forum mentioned putting starting and stopping points into dvdshrink and I forgot about using that. The DGIndex was working but with unsatisfactory results.
