Hi all,

I currently encode my DVDs using Staxrip(X264) or Recode. I use Cinema AVC and they are typically around 700MB for a 2 hour movie. I usually crop if needed but do not resize unless it is a boring movie that my wife likes...which will bring the filesize down a little.

My question is will I get a better quality encode if I start to buy and backup HD-DVDs instead of DVDs?
IE: If I buy the same movie in both formats and back them up using the same encoding tool into the same resolution and filesize, would the HD-DVD be of better quality?

woah!

to me it should be a better end result using the hd version as you are going to use a 1920x1080 as a source, and not an already mpeg2 encoded 720x480 version.

but thats my 2 cents, probably wrong tho...

No, you are definately right :)

Theres more source information in the HD version and hence x264 can decide whats better to keep or throw away as compared to what the mpeg 2 encoder throws away with a DVD encode.
