View Full Version : Audio problems with DV capturing

I have a problem with my capturing using a Sony DCR-HC85 with firewire interface.

First off, when I bought this cam and tried capturing from DV to raw AVI, the video captured has random audio gaps. This does not happen all the time, but it is very noticeable. The audio gap is 1 frame (this is when I have captured in via Premiere Pro 2 and zoomed in the audio track, yes, it is one frame), but the video does not skip at all. This gap happens maybe less than 5% of the time, but it's very bad especially in gig or band performance videos.

Next, I notice that I hear some short hiss sounds from a section of the raw captured AVI file, and when I compress it to XVID with LAME MP3, that hiss sound turns into an audio squeaking sound. What's the cause of the hiss sound?

I'm trying to isolate the problem if it's either this cam, the cable, or the firewire card which is at fault. But I have tried capturing in another computer and I'm getting the very same problem.

Anyone with experience can help me out with this one? Thanks in advance.

if gaps are always on the same places you can blame bad media/and or camera head alignment.

No, it happens on different spots. Random.

I've tried different tapes too. Same brand, the Sony DVM60. 60 @ SP and 90 @ SP (but seems like 96 minutes on LP).

To fill you in, I always record at LP, 16-bit. Always recording straight - I don't playback while the recording of an event is over.
