I have this average (not too old) computer in my movie room but I have lag from time to time (2-4 seconds for every minute) and I was wondering if there's anything I can do to boost my computers performance. I'm running vista and using quick time's alternative classic player with coreavc pro, i've also switches vista to high performance and cleaned out the registry and all that good stuff. I basically just need this computer to play movies, using vlc player, classic player and windows media so I dont need anything else to run in the background that do other stuff, any suggestions?

Are you sure CoreAVC is being used to play back the video?

If you have a higher DirectShow priority codec interfering, like FFDShow, you'll have to disable its H.264 playback.

Use the CCCP Insurgent (http://www.cccp-project.net/download.php?type=cccpi)'s test render feature to find out whether CoreAVC is being used or not.

There's nothing normally running in Windows that uses any appreciable amount of CPU speed.

You can disable deblocking in the CoreAVC preferences for a mild speed boost at the cost of considerable quality in low-bitrate videos.

i'll never understand how people can ask hardware specific questions
and not tell their hardware specs!

anyhow.. why on earth would you run vista on a pc you yourself
call old? use at least xp or win2k, you'd get better performance
right of the bat..
