View Full Version : MPEG Conversion

I got some Dr Who episodes on my desktop which I recorded the last months. I cut them down with projectx and this one made mpg from them.
Now I want to free some space and so I need to convert them into H264 (if that is fine enough). But the problem begins here. Is there a tool which makes all steps at once? I tried GordianKnot but there comes now options for H264 and the usability of this is some kind of ... strange for me. I don't want to install much apps like with gordianknot. I think the codec for video and sound would be enough plus the program which makes me able to convert them.
Maybe you people can help me out here.

What woulds be a good FAST profile to use?
I got an C2D 6430 with the Insane profile I get around 1-4 frames and that is something what I can't understand. Is there a profile which gives me more speed (over 20-30 fps)with nearly the same quality?

x264CLIgui?
I'm not sure about the functionality of that one really... I encoded one file with it, the quality was good and it was very straight-forward, but it got the file size too small. In fact, it output a ~72MiB encoded file, for a 1h38min long movie, to which I had allocated 900MiB. I don't know if the i-frame appearing frequency also turned out much lower or something, because when seeking the file in a player it would take several seconds of playback to get the picture correct... The quality with x264, in that 72MiB file, was much better than in a 170MiB+ Xvid encoded with FFmpeg @ ~300kbit/s, though... Then again I wouldn't put my money on my FFmpeg skills.

The executable must be in x264CLIgui directory's root.
I don't know if this even is what you were after, you still need to merge with audio somehow. Anyway I used GordianKnot with ffdshow x264 codec, and encoding was ssslllooow but quality was good. Probably not what you were looking for, though.

If you want a target bitrate you cannot get the same quality at that kind of speed increase. You could try the other HQ presets in MeGUI which will provide some speed increase but I doubt you will get 20-30 fps encoded with any HQ preset. If you absolutely want speed over compressed size you could use a constant quality mode (--crf) and look at this thread for speed tips: How to optimize for speed rather than compression? (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=127463) from the AVC forum. Just adjust the encoding settings till you achieve your desired speed.
If you want a GUI to do it all for you, look in the MPEG-4 GUI forum (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=78) and see if there is one that suits your needs. I should mention that Gordian Knot is horribly outdated, AutoGK is slightly newer but I think I would reccomend AutoMKV for an all in one program. I haven't used the latter two programs but they seem to be quite popular.

That's why there are so many profiles, one's bound to fit. If the HQ are too slow, go with CQ or AE, or even a 1P. There's no list of profile speeds that I know of, currently, but testing with a one minute sample should quickly narrow it down to a few profiles with acceptable speed. Be sure to recognize that the avisynth script also contributes some slowdown, quite a bit with certain options (like EDI).

Funnily enough I was in the same situation, having the entire DW series sat on my HD and got around to encoding this week. For me I used the crf profile set to 20 and got this:

Encoding was +/- .5 at 13 fps on a E6300.

Sorry for late! I used superavconverter to convert all formats video and audio multimedia files. It is very easy and powerful! I recommend this program in my blog (http://cstrikedish.blogspot.com/). Try it!
