View Full Version : DVDs play in PC not in player

I use NeroVision version 4.9.5.7 to make DVDs from avi files. Some DVDs will play fine on my PC, but won't play at all in my DVD player. I'm assuming it's a codec issue. (I've had trouble with DivX encoded files, even though I have the Divx freeware bundle installed.
How can I tell what codec was used to encode an avi file, and either recode it using another codec or get Nero to use the right one to make it compatible with the DVD player (which is a few years old.)
(Or maybe that's not the problem? I'm pretty sure it's not a media issue.) TIA
P.S. Not afraid to RTFM, links to FAQs would be appreciated...

sounds like you need to read rule 6.
after all, you should know the file specs if you made them from
the original dvd you own, right?
however, its probably the resolution of those files, the SAP doesnt like as divx files usually have reduced resolutions.
gspot is the tool to analyze the files.

Thanks for your response. I tried the DVD I was having a problem with in my (newer) DVD player, no problems.
Is there a way I can determine if this is a codec, media, (it's DVD-R) or other problem?
I'm going to rip another DVD right now, copy it, and try it. However, how do I know which codec is being used to encode the movie? I have the DivX 6.61 codec installed. If I use Nero to write a new DVD and DivX is the problem, how do I stop it? I have all the default settings on DivX I'm pretty sure.

what i dont get is; why do you make an .avi file from a DVD and then convert the .avi into a DVD again?
makes no sense to me. if you have the original DVD, then just rip it and burn a backup dvd from that. no sense of encoding it to divx (avi).
i dont use Nero, i use RipIt4Me to rip a DVD. at the end of this
ripping process, RI4M opens dvdshrink, in which you can "shrink"
a dvd and make an .iso out of it to burn afterwards.
how much it has to shrink the dvd depends on the original disc (single or double layer, size etc.)

I used to keep an ISO copy of my movies on my extra hard drive (I have kids who tend to scratch DVDs.) Whenever I needed a new copy of a disk I just wrote a new one from the image. That got a little space intensive, so now I just recode the main movie to an avi, around 700 meg as opposed to 4 or 8 gig.
Other reasons I can't discuss here, but in general I'd like to know more about how the whole decode/encode process works, especially with something like Nero. If I have 3-4 codecs installed, which one is it using, which ones can it use, how do I tell, etc.

Hi!I use NeroVision version 4.9.5.7 to make DVDs from avi files.I used to keep an ISO copy of my movies on my extra hard drive (I have kids who tend to scratch DVDs.)...so now I just recode the main movie to an aviWhy in the world would you want to make a very much poorer quality DVD from an .AVI that you made from your original, commercial DVD, when you can simply make a backup of the original DVD?

you'll end up with a real bad quality dvd..
look into Auto-GK to make the divx/xvid files, and
look into avi2dvd to go back.
i cant advise you to do it though. much better to make a
simple copy of the dvd with dvdshrink.
put the retail dvd into your dvdrom and in 30-40 minutes you
have a copy. (Ripit4me, dvdd, fixvts, dvdshrink)
encoding a dvd to xvid takes 3+ hours.
going back from xvid to dvd will take some more hours (never done that myself).
quality will be terrible.

Other reasons I can't discuss here
Could the reasons be the same as the ones in this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=121078)? As mentioned already, your request is both suspicious and rather ridiculous if you can in fact go back to the source material.

Holy crap. I'm having trouble burning DVDs that seem to work in one of my DVD players but not in another. Just looking for a little help -- see my post -- or links to FAQs that I could use to educate myself on the decoding/burning process so I could diagnose the problem.
I have tons of home videos I've successfully taken off my camera and burned to DVDs using the same PC. What codec was used for those? I don't know, but learning more about it would be helpful.
Didn't mean to be suspicious, not looking for pirating tips, just curious as to how the process works and how codecs are used.
I'll check somewhere else.

You may have a media compatibility issue as well as the issues you seem to have with your source.
Sounds as if you need to familiarize yourself with your source files, as well as the Forum Rules and the Announcement atop the Noobs home page. I'm going to put a stop to this one, now.
