I'm brand new to the boards, well as brand new as you can be and post that is, and I was pointed here by a friend who couldn't answer my question.

I just got a DVD for my birthday but, much to my chagrin, the manufactures screwed up the transfer so all of the voices are lower than they should be. I took a look around the web and apparently they had converted it into a NTSC file when it should have remained a PAL. Anyhow I can either send in my copy of the DVD, and its possible 5.1 surround sound, for a new copy with the fixed audio which is only available in stereo.

So I’ve decided to try and figure out how to fix the audio myself on the off chance that I can keep that 5.1 surround sound. Now I’m not computer illiterate, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to fix the audio on my own. So if anyone can help me with this I would be forever grateful.

Currently I have the film on my hard drive as .avi file if that information helps at all.

Hi!I just got a DVD for my birthdayWhat's the Title and Region of the DVD? What Region are you in?Currently I have the film on my hard drive as .avi file if that information helps at all. What software and procedures did you use to convert your commercial DVD to .AVI? Load it into GSpot and post a screen capture back here.

If you want to create a good backup DVD, what was the reason you created an .AVI?

Hi, and welcome to the forum,

If you want to create a good backup DVD, what was the reason you created an .AVI?

Good question.

I take it you're completely new to video encoding and have never done any of this before, much less done an NTSC to PAL conversion. My first inclination is to tell you to go practice encoding for a couple of years and then come back. What you're setting out to do is not for the faint of heart. Anyway, you only asked about the audio (so far) and how to speed it up to PAL and raise the pitch by a semitone. You can follow this guide to first convert the DD 5.1 AC3 audio to 6 WAV files:

http://www.ntsc2pal.hostrocket.com/FramesetPOSAudio2.htm

Then you can convert those 6 WAV files back to AC3 using the commercial AC3 encoders mentioned here:

http://www.ntsc2pal.hostrocket.com/mainaudioac3.htm

or you can use free encoders following the process on this page:

http://www.ntsc2pal.hostrocket.com/FramesetPOSAudio1.htm

I think I would use Aften and one of its GUIs these days, though, for converting the WAV audio back to DD 5.1 AC3. It's better than AC3Machine.

This process will speed up or shorten the audio. The video will have to be similarly speeded up. If you want to raise the pitch of the audio, but keep it at the same length, then you can process those 6 WAV files (without having changed their length) in a WAV Editor, but I haven't done any of that. Maybe others can help, after you provide some more information.

I'm also with setarip_old in wanting some more information about this DVD, as, no offense intended, some of the things you wrote are a little peculiar.
