I have an original dual layer Movie DVD complete with subs and menus.

video: mpeg1 or 2, 7900 kbps

audio: ac3 448 kbps

I want to rip it to reduce size so that I can fit it in an ordinary single layer sony dvd for storage perposes. I want to use matroska container to retain as much originality as possible.

1. tell me what video codec and audio codec I should use.

2. I want a VBR audio and video too if possible

3. I want my chapters intact

4. I want the menus intact too

5. I want an appropriate software for the same perpose.

6. I don't think I need that 448 kbps. I heard 128 kbps vorbis or aac are quite good(I tested them too)

7. its a widescreen video.

8. I think the bit rate is a bit too high, what about you?

and finally, gimme the bitrates, codecs so that I can make it fit in a CD too...

Remember that I want it for backup, not for playing on a standalne dvd/cd player. if it plays on VLC, fine.

should I use theora or H.264?

Should I use Vorbis or AAC?

and what app can let me convert a DVD to a single MKV file?

You want to make the file 4.5gigs .mkv to fit on a dvd?

can be even 4.3 gigs... I just want it to somehow fit into the disc.

>It need not be played on a DVD player.

>a slightly lower quality of video is not a problem as I can postprocess it

>the audio needn't be that 448 kbps, I can make it 128 or even 112. a good format will sound good:cool:

UPDATE: even XviD is an option here for video

use dvdshrink and just "shrink" it ;)

can I use the format of my choice using it?

errm, no.
it will compress the dvd so it fits on a dvd5 (4.3gb).

best is to rip in movie only mode and delete as much as possible
like secondary audio streams and subtitles. the resulting dvd will
just play the movie if you pop it into the player -> no menu.
you can watch it on the pc, just like a commercial dvd or as said
in any SAP.
its the easiest and fastest way, takes bout 40 minutes on my
pc from putting the dvd in the tray to having a burnt backup.

the problem is that I have only 256 mb ram.

and I want to preserve the chapters and menus, along with the subs.

I just want to reduce the bitrate of the audio and video before transcoading

and I want matroska. divx is a last ditch effort...

DVDshrink will make an exact copy with menus and all. The only difference is that it is compressed. You still get a DVD in standard format with menues subs chapters everything.

You dont need divx or matrosuka or anything.

You say you only want it for backup and thats the best way to do it I think.....

i want to compress it in another format because mpeg2 is crap. and is ac3 any good at a low bitrate? compared to vorbis or aac? what will be the format of the video? I wanted XviD or something like it which produses a small file size. I also want to be able to specify audio bitrate, and audio should be 112 to 128 kbps, and I don't want 5.1, as I have a 2.1 setup with me.

can it do h.264???

Mpeg2 is not the crap. In your case DVD9->DVD5 I would use DVDshrink as some members already suggested and explained it. But now you want smaller size. You should make up your mind what do you really want.

It's your choice whether you will listen or not.

well, I said smaller size in the comparitive case.

for te same X gb, xvid produces better quality than mpeg2

besides I want to give compressing audio preference.

....and thats why I want to avoid dvdshrink

Do you really think that in DVD5 space, DVDshrinked version(with original AC3 5.1) will look bad? Pls, don't make fast foolish conclusions!

And you want to keep menus(not only chapters point, but DVD graphical menus) in mkv. Sorry, there's no MKV authoring tool.

So regarding you wish list, there're more reasons to use dvdshrink, especially concerning that target size is DVD5.

I dont think DVD shrink compresses the audio at all. Just the movie. If you dont want 5.1 audio then dvdshrink will allow you to take out the 5.1 soundtrack and use the 2.1 soundtrack only. That would save you even more space to compress the video less.

Its a free download and will only take 1hr of your time at most, If its not worth it for you to try it out, then I dont know what to tell you.

mpeg2 is just fine for this compression
