I have just completed the horrible task of burning 300+ VHS and Betamax of Rugby and Cycling on to DVD's using software provided by the makers of my standalone DVD recorder.

I am now starting a new learning curve and would like to ask:

1. What format (mpeg, iso etc) would be well suited for standalone as well as computer DVD players

2. What software would be good for editing the DVD's (I am not going to edit all 300+, but would like to do a reasonable job on about 40% of them....for some of the cycling, menu creation would be useful but not absolutely necessary)

Thanks

You're not allowed to ask "what's best" per forum rule 12 so I have edited your post rather than issue a strike.

Hi.

burning 300+ VHS and Betamax

I bet that took a few hours.
Firstly ,your dvdīs that you have created should be in MPEG2
and therefor should play in PC/ Standalone . Have you tried them yet ?

Next the editing
There are a number of programs that will let you do this , not sure if any are free. I used to use power producer or director ,canīt remember itīs been a while.
You could also try windows movie maker in start/programs /acc.
Hope it helps :)

I have an original dual layer Movie DVD complete with subs and menus.

video: mpeg1 or 2, 7900 kbps

audio: ac3 448 kbps

I want to rip it to reduce size so that I can fit it in an ordinary single layer sony dvd for storage perposes. I want to use matroska container to retain as much originality as possible.

1. tell me what video codec and audio codec I should use.

2. I want a VBR audio and video too if possible

3. I want my chapters intact

4. I want the menus intact too

5. I want an appropriate software for the same perpose.

6. I don't think I need that 448 kbps. I heard 128 kbps vorbis or aac are quite good(I tested them too)

7. its a widescreen video.

8. I think the bit rate is a bit too high, what about you?

and finally, gimme the bitrates, codecs so that I can make it fit in a CD too...

Why don't you use DVD Rebuilder along with CCE, ProCoder or HC? That'll give you a fully compliant DVD5 that plays anywhere, and looks great.

I have an original dual layer Movie DVD complete with subs and menus.... You should start your own threads. Hijacking other people's threads is considered rude.
