View Full Version : Decimate improperly deinterlaced footage

I'm currently compiling a project made up of short clips that various people have contributed to me. Unfortunately, many of these people are rather clueless when it comes to the technical aspects, and something that I see a lot is people will deinterlace footage that should have been IVTC'd.
My compilation is going to be 23.976 fps, and so I think the best way to get all of this 29.97 deinterlaced footage down to 23.976 would be to decimate the blended frames. What filter, if any, would be my best bet here?

You shouldn't just decimate as you'll end up removing the real film frame within the blends and create jerkier motion. There's a function called FixBlendIVTC (http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/FixBlendIVTC) specifically designed for this, although I couldn't figure out how to get it to work well personally. Some of the other deblenders might also work.
Of course this solution will look worse than actually getting the people to IVTC their clips properly.

What filter, if any, would be my best bet here? There is no best, per forum rule 12.
With such trashed video, minor differences between decimaters are unlikely to be significant.

Sorry, bad wording there :p
Anyways, my thinking is that when you have deinterlaced video instead of doing IVTC, then 1 or 2 frames out of a group should have a huge noticeable blending, and the rest of the frames in the group should look fairly ok. If you decimate the video, then decimating the frames with the huge blend rather than a good looking frame would be the ideal outcome.
I'll check out this FixBlendIVTC when I get a chance and see how it works out. I do wish I could get people to actually produce good video for me, but its hard enough to explain to some people how to output an avi with uncompressed audio, let alone get them to do anything productive via avisynth.

Would it be ideal, though? Without the blends I would think it would be jerkier. One man's ideal...

I forgot to mention that the video source is animation, so the jerkiness isn't as much of a factor (and the blending is more apparent) than with live action. You may well be correct about that though.
Trying FixBlendIVTC... hmm... seems to create some sort of nasty warped interlace-like artifacts o.o

I just noticed the wiki version of FixBlendIVTC hasn't been updated, I'll get on that. Okay, all updated. Remember to use sbd=true and it should work fine for yours.
I never knew typeless variables were possible in script functions. The crazy things you learn!
