I prefer http://kaffeine.sourceforge.net/. The xine-lib isn't used much outside Linux, AFAIK.

Kaffeine is fine, however if they are using totem then I would think they are running gnome and not kde, not that you probably can't run kaffeine under gnome, just doesn't make that much sense. Maybe try gxine?

I have dual boot Ubuntu feisty + XP pro. wish kaffine is available for gnome :(
PS: what is the best media player for gnome?

Nothing is stopping you from using kaffeine with gnome. It will require installing libraries you otherwise don't need (kdelibs) and it will look differently from the rest of gnome, but it will be fully functional.
Have you tried gxine, like celtic_druid suggested?
I don't use gnome, but I think most gnome people use totem, which you don't like.

Maybe should have installed kubuntu? Still should be able to run sudo apt-get install kde-desktop or something like that to install kde.

first I need to fix my net connection with Ubuntu. anyway, there is always VLC for me, which I use when I don't have anything better(Xine, J River Media Centre, Xbox Media Centre are what I call better than VLC). I am familiar with it anyway...
wait a sec! vlc is switching to QT4 from WxWidets:eek: I should have installed Kubuntu instead:mad:
PS: I downloaded the OpenSuSe Live DVD. I have a P4 2.66 GHz PC with 256 mb ram. It said I need atleast 512 mb ram to boot either from gnome or kde. is it the same for the installed version?(it looked pretty neat to me whenI saw it in my friend's house) Should I go for kde opensuse or kubuntu the next time?(I have a 18.6 GiB partition for linux, including swap and all that. I cant use any more for linux, but I don't think it will be a problem. all my music and videos are in another drive:))
