View Full Version : Ability to hard-code subtitles in Nero Digital

Hello,

I'm sure I'm about to be swatted for placing a feature request here, but I've seen Nero engineers browsing these forums from time to time, and figured it wouldn't hurt. I'm also going to contact Nero directly.

What about the option to hard-code subtitles into DVD backups using AVC? I play my files back using Windows Media Edition, and it doesn't like subtitles done... well... "the Nero way." Movies like Apocalypto get annoying when you can't understand what they're saying, and the subs aren't true "forced" subs: rather, they reside in a seperate folder, and play by default on the DVD. There are many movies like this.

In the meantime, guys, have you found any work-arounds?

I'd guess one way is to use VOBSub and Avisynth, and bring the .avs script to Recode (drag&drop the .avs to Recode, otherwise it may not take it).

See: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic87065.html

But I can also forward your request.

@JohnV

Qoute: "But I can also forward your request."

That would be terrific if I could ask that favor of you. On my own, I have no idea who in particular to reach unless I sent a generic Email through technical support... but since I'm not trouble-shooting a problem with Nero's software, I'm not sure how that'll go. One of the things I love most about Recode is the simplicity, and adding this feature would cure a major headache of mine.

In the meantime, however, I'll check out the link you've provided and read through my options.

Thank you very much for your help and time!

Ok, if you have some problems with burning subs with avisynth, let me know and I'll take a look. :)

I already ask for this feature in Nero Recode 2 two times but I only receive a email with these words: "I am sending this request to our development department", but the first request is about one year ago and this feature is not implemented yet.

Well it can't be guaranteed that a feature request will be accepted.

I had the same problem with Apocalypto. When I used Nero recode to make a Mp4 AVC even though I had selected English subtitles not the closed caption ones but the normal English subtitles I had no way to hardcode them on. This is fine if you are going to use Nero Showtime to play it back because you can select the subtitles but I make the Mp4 Avc’s to playback in a PS3 and there is no way to select the subtitles on a PS3 with a Mp4. this is something that definately needs to be addressed with this program and on a side note. I haven't ever gotten a response from Nero whenever I write them I get no response back at all and I have now spent close to $200 for the program and plug-ins. I have been trying to load my m2ts files into Nero recode & it would take forever to load them once it loaded a file it would tell me I would have to have the blu-ray/HD plug-in so I broke down and purchased the serial/license for that which is actually already in the program. Unfortunately even with the plug-in when I get to the final step and hit burn which actually is going to a harddisc folder the program fails or crashes. So I have tried to use Nero Vision which according to the program accepts the m2ts files as acceptable media: however it has a very difficult time accepting the m2ts files or doesn’t at all & even if it does once I get to the final step the program crashes. When I tried to do this with Nero Vision before it told me I must have the blu-ray hd plug-in but the plug-in has done nothing. I have loaded the m2ts files into PS3 Video 9 and the program seems to accept the files just fine unfortunately I can not find anyway to adjust final output. I would like to make decent quality mp4 AVC files from my m2ts files to fit on one dvd-r I don’t see why nero can’t handle it because in recode it will at least accepts the m2ts file albeit it does take a very long time to analyze. I like the east of use with Nero recode & vision but I have been very disappointed with this program and the money I have spent.

@a1677c

Do you have .NET Framework 2.0 installed? I have no idea if it'll fix the problems (I'm still waiting for the format war to subside before investing more money in movies I already have on DVD), but the Nero website mentions needing this. Just to be on the safe side, here's a link.

That's assuming that you're using Windows XP, 32 bit (the most common version).

Again, this advice may not help you since I don't mess around with HD yet. But it sounds like it's worth a look.

I'll point out this to the management. I agree that such feature would be useful in these cases.

Ok, well I don't know why you didn't get response from the support department. But good you wrote here, so I can start helping you with your problems.

John that would be great if you could look into this. The only response I receive is a canned email the one that they send out to everyone who sends out an email stating they have received the email and will look into it or something to that effect. I am not quite sure what is happening with Recode since it will accept the m2ts file after about 20 minutes of analyzing. It will even tell me what my bit rate will be etcetera & the preview works but it’s a little glitchy. When I get to the burn process it fails and sends me a log to my documents I am putting my log below for your perusal. I have also tried running the m2ts through tsremux to strip down the m2ts file to the bare essentials again this does not make a difference. Although my system is a fairly robust dual core setup I thought I would try it on another system & the same thing occurred. One question I do have for you though is it is my understanding that a PS3 can not accept an mp4 over 4gb because it is fat 32 so if the problem gets fixed will I have to set the file size at 4gb instead of 4.3gb? Additionally I understand there is a way to change the mp4 to a mpg so one can use the full 4.3gb’s on the dvd-r as I have read there are no limitations on a mpeg file for PS3? Currently I have been able to use the full 4.3gb using the standard AVC profile with 2 to 3 movies on the disc because the files usually end up well under 2 gb using the standard avc profile set at or around 2.00 Mbps. The quality is exceptional and there is no loss in quality from the original dvd. I am playing these back in a ps3 on a 1080p 46” LCD. If I remux a m2ts 1920 x 1080 hd file to mp4 avc cinema profile which is 1280 x 720 at 6.00 Mbps at 4.3gb then my results should be very good. I know the license/serial was accepted properly because when I try to load the m2ts files into recode or vision the blu-ray/hd plug-in pop up appears no more. I do hope there is will be a work around for this or patch by nero otherwise I have spent the additional $30.00 for nothing.

writersblock29 I do have Framework 2.0 installed & I am using XP 32 bit media center edition. I went with blu-ray because at the time one could purchased a blu-ray drive/burner for about the same cost as a hd drive only so I thought that was a no brainier. I think both are fine formats & I am sure whatever format you decide to buy won’t make much difference since I am sure you will see many more dual format players to hit the market besides the one by LG. I can tell you this I went from Laserdisc to DVD now blu-ray and for the first time with blu-ray or HD dvd one can truly experience film like quality in there own home.
