As already suggested in several other DVD Backup tools forums, here's the idea:
why don't considering the idea of using MediaCoder (http://mediacoder.sf.net/) (that is GPLd) as engine instead of VirtualDub ?
Main advantages are that it's constantly and indipendently upgraded (for example by including new codecs like Dirac (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1354)), don't needs to be installed, has an XML interface for extensions and will be multiplatform soon (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?title=MediaCoder_Changelog#0.6.0-pre1) (that means Linux version for you too without a so-mutch work).
Here's the extension how-to documents:
Creating extensions for MediaCoder (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?title=Creating_extensions_for_MediaCoder)
MediaCoder Extension Scratch Builder (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/extbuild/)
