View Full Version : How fast a full encoding can be?

Mozart
2nd January 2002, 14:07
Does anybody here wants to know how fast can be a full encoding, with all features turned on? The machine is a Dell Precision 340 workstation, P4 2GHz, 1 GB RAM, which was just bought by my lab. The movie is "OMEN" (a profecia), R4, NTSC, second 1/2 ripped (I'm usualy encoding only almost 1/2 of movie by time. In this case, it is almost 54 minutes time lenght). No one otimization - OC... - was done in the machine. Thus, it was used as it is. Here is the log

btw: that was the last time running windows 2000. Now, this machine will run only FreeBSD, which means no more DVD2SVCD working. :(

impressive. Gotta upgrade ...my fastest computer at home is P450...doesn't cut it. RTCW takes 60-80secs to load compared to only 16secs on a Althon 1600.

It looks as just half a movie (78261 frames), so you have to add approx. 2½ hours to the encoding time + additional audio and SVCD Authoring time. But it is still fast.

yes, as I said, that was just half a movie I'm usualy encoding only almost 1/2 of movie by time. In this case, it is almost 54 minutes time lenght.

However, the impressive thing is that it uses 3h19min to make a FULL encoding of this movie. What means full? It means 2 downsampled audio tracks + 3 pass video encoding + 3 subs tracks.

I had made also a test with only one "not downsampled" audio track + CBR video encoding, with the same movie. The process was done in just 41 minutes!

But this machine is in the College's laboratory, and it will be used only for scientific pourpose. Because of this, we need to install FreeBSD (Unix-like OS) in this machine, and it will not run Windows anymore. Is there any DVD2SVCD for Linux?

Well, I'm on a poor-man Celeron II 566Mhz boosted up to 850MHZ and I have an average 12hours processing time for a 1h40 movie, wi!th subtitles extraction, 2 pass VBR CCE, 2 800MB Cds, audio offset set to 4, and VcdxBuild enabled with chapters.

Seems ok for me. I often use 1 pass VBR with TS on in the AVIsynth parameters and then I reach about 6 or 7 hours for the whole stuff.

I'm quite happy with it :) :)

Waldok.
